JFK's family was really big on service to those who had less than they did. I don't think the Kennedy family is/was perfect, but I do believe that compassion was drilled into them from the time they were very young.

Yeah, he was wealthy, but certain other parties are wealthy, too, and don't seem to feel the same responsibility.

FDR wasn't perfect, either, but he felt a responsibility to get the country back on the right track. He knew that giving a man a fish would feed him for a day, but helping him secure meaningful employment (and get his family back on their feet, too,) would far outweigh the cost to the federal government to do so.
