Language is amazing.

"Nigh" has its origins in England, and was used frequently in the King James Version of the Bible. That's probably why it became part of the speech in that area, where the Bible was the main tool used in teaching reading. Of course, "unto" is also a frequently encountered Biblical word, and "nigh unto" occurs 30 or 40 times in the King James Version, both in the Old and New Testaments.
