the use of the word "liberal" in liberal arts -- like literature, languages, history, etc.

Naturally, liberals will understand what makes a good story much better if they have read the great literature: Steinbeck, Faulkner, Proust, Goethe, Balzac, Camus, Voltaire, etc.

I have Ayn Rand. Her literary ability does not compare to that of Proust or Voltaire or Faulkner or Steinbeck.
