The 16th Amendment to the Constitution

I post this to help arm you against mindless conservative arguments. I've heard conservatives time and again claim that the Constitution does not authorize the Congress to collect income tax, so it is therefore illegal.

As a resident of a very red state I can tell you that this is widely repeated and believed in RW circles. Someone shouted it on the radio, so it must be true. They don't bother to read the Constitution to verify it.

Stop this argument in its tracks by remembering the number 16. Here is the text of the 16th Amendment to the United States Constitution:

The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.

I post this because I encountered this very argument yet again last night. After posting the 16th Amendment, the other guy's comments ceased.

You might also want to brush up on The Tea Act of 1773.
