I always enjoy and learn something new when we do a survival thread with tips.

I have stocked up on canned goods, beans, rice, pasta, powdered milk, flour, sugar and tuna. It is all stuff that we use everyday anyway.

I have learned to bake my own bread and start REALLY cooking from scratch. With barely a pantry full and a few basic recipes, we have about a month of food.

My biggest fear is that people will use this situation to gouge us.

For example...we are experiencing a drought here in Texas. A friend lives up around Dallas and just paid $105 for a bale of hay that normally costs $25.

People are literally giving away livestock on Freecycle...because you can't afford to feed them.

Some friends that raise cattle and pigs--went ahead and slaughtered early because they felt that even though they wouldn't get as much meat...cutting their losses would keep their costs down in the long run.
