375. NC - (State House Speaker Thom) Tillis enjoys defending his record (ALEC North Carolina) MULTI Aug17
MULTIPLE stories running in North Carolina on ALEC members and legislation. There was a great piece by WRAL early on covering the ALEC 'Tort Reform" bill (see LINKS):

ONWARD to Mr. Tillis, leader of the "most efficient legislature since 1973"

Tillis enjoys defending his record

CLIPS:
CORNELIUS Republican House Speaker Thom Tillis (R - 38th Mecklenburg) met critics head-on Tuesday night at a crowded town hall meeting that covered everything from education and tax reform to raises for his staff. Nearly 200 people packed town hall to hear the former town commissioner answer questions about his first legislative session as one of the three most powerful people in N.C. government.

At one point he offered to recognize their questions first. And twice he pointed out the host of an anti-Tillis website who was videotaping the event: "Hey, Doug," he said. Tillis, a former IBM management consultant, touted the efficiency of a session that finished most of its work in less time than any General Assembly since 1973.

ALEC Tattoos? Huh, great idea...
He (Tillis) also objected to the suggestion from one Democrat that GOP lawmakers took direction from the American Legislative Exchange Council, a controversial, free-market group that offers model legislation to lawmakers around the country. Backed by Koch Companies and other businesses, it recently gave Tillis one of its "Legislator of the Year" awards. "It's stretching it to say that we're suddenly indoctrinated and have tattoos on our forehead just because we attended an ALEC conference," he said.

CLIP:
House Speaker Thom Tillis in the last few months handed out raises as high as 27 percent to half his staff after vowing in January to set an example for others in state government by cutting his office payroll. Tillis' general counsel Jason Kay got a 27 percent raise, from $110,000 a year to $140,000. Chief of staff Charles Thomas got a 25 percent, $30,000-a-year increase, from $120,000 to $150,000.

Tillis receives ALEC award

CLIP:
(ALEC's) "Board of Directors" is made up of lawmakers from more than a dozen states, including House Appropriations Chair Harold Brubaker, R- Randolph.

ALEC came to Raleigh on March 22, 2011, to offer NC lawmakers a "boot camp" on tort reform. The following day, a product liability reform bill was filed that appeared to be taken straight from ALEC's model legislation.
Several other bills filed in NC this year also appear to share some genetic material with ALEC legislation, including the first drafts of proposals on gun rights and medical malpractice.

The group has been in the headlines recently due to accusations by critics that it pushes anti-union, anti-consumer legislation designed to benefit its major corporate sponsors. ALEC categorically denies these accusations.

This week’s pilgrimage to New Orleans by more than 30 conservative members of the N.C. General Assembly turned out to be something of a victory lap. House Speaker Thom Tillis, a Republican from Mecklenburg County, was one of eight lawmakers honored as “legislators of the year” by the American Legislative Exchange Council at its annual meeting.

A sampling of Tweets by attendees at this year’s conference portray a Jeffersonian wonk’s dream: “The Heritage booth is open.” “Hanging out at the Cato booth.” “Enjoying a morning federalism discussion.” “Dr. Laffer: ‘The revolution you are leading today will make the Reagan one look like kids’ play.’”
Earlier in the week, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal received ALEC’s highest award. The North Carolina delegation in New Orleans includes 32 House members and at least one senator (Sen. Tom Apodaca).

The NEWS & OBSERVER - Working up a Long List of ALEC Members in North Carolina...
BTW, when Dome first reported this on Tuesday, we neglected to include the list of House members attending. Here it is (ALEC Members in the North Carolina State House attending ALEC Conference in NOLA Aug 2011):

One State Senator was identified:

Several media outlets now in full stride on the ALEC infestation of North Carolina, but where's South Carolina?

Note to HighPlainsDem: No problem, just keeping up on things!
