MSNBC
Updated: 10:30 p.m. ET Dec. 8, 2004WASHINGTON - Elections in Iraq could lead to the creation of a Shiite-led Islamic republic closely aligned with Iran, a development that “would be very destabilizing for the Gulf countries and actually for the whole region,” Jordan’s King Abdullah II said Wednesday in an exclusive interview with MSNBC-TV’s Chris Matthews.

The Jordanian monarch, who was in Washington for meetings with President Bush and other U.S. officials, called such an outcome a “worst-case scenario.” But he indicated that it is not beyond the realm of possibility given Iranian influence in Iraq’s Shia community and threats by Sunni Muslims to boycott the election.

“The worst outcome (is) if you don't have a secular state, in other words if the new government is strongly represented by those that might have support from Iran,” he said. “We are hoping that's not the case.”

1. I saw him on Hardball
and had to turn him off. He acted like such a Bush Toady that I was stunned. He would not criticize this administration on anything.

4. If Iran merged with Iraq and federated with Afghanistan,
what a great "terrorist" nation, that would be.

5. the middle east has always been afraid of this
Iraq and Iran are the only 2 countries in the ME with a Shiite majority. That's why they "tolerated" Saddam. They loved that Saddam was Sunni so the two countries fought each other instead of other countries in the region.

It's a real threat.

7. hmmmm? -- agreeing with bush on the surface?
i'm not comfortable with the idea that king abdullah II is all that UNCOMFORATABLE with iran.

i think he'd rather see u.s. adventurism come to an end more than anything else.

but he has to play the situation the way it exists right now.
he has, after all, warned this admin that it's war was going to have negative effects -- but i think abdullah thinks he can survive iran's influence just fine.
