Algerian violence kills 2, children freed

ALGIERS, Algeria, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Algerian newspapers said Saturday one gunman and a soldier were killed, while 4 children were freed from captivity in an operation west of the country.

The newspapers quoted security sources as saying authorities clashed Thursday with a group of armed militants in Tisemsilt province, 125 miles (200 kilometers) west of Algiers, in which a soldier and a gunman were killed.

They said another militant was captured while the authorities they freed the children from captivity.

The papers said the security forces also arrested five suspected militants accused of robbing people at fake security check-points in the northern African country.
