Senators Hesitant to Replace Rumsfeld
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&e=3&u=/ap/20041219/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/rumsfeld

WASHINGTON - Acknowledging mistakes in Iraq (news - web sites) by the Bush administration, leading Republicans expressed reluctance Sunday that the White House replace Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, who has lost the confidence of some GOP lawmakers over the conduct of the war.

The chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee (news - web sites) said a change at the top of the Pentagon (news - web sites) would be too disruptive, given the elections scheduled in Iraq for Jan. 30. Sen. John Warner (news, bio, voting record), R-Va., also said the administration was addressing the missteps that have occurred in the aftermath of the U.S.-led ouster of Iraqi President Sudan Hussein.

"We should not at this point in time entertain any idea of changing those responsibilities in the Pentagon," Warner told NBC's "Meet the Press."

Sen. Richard Lugar (news, bio, voting record), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, added, "We really can't go through that ordeal" now of finding a successor. Rumsfeld "should be held accountable and he should stay in office," said Lugar, R-Ind.

"Secretary Rumsfeld is doing a spectacular job," the president's chief of staff, Andrew Card, told ABC's "This Week."

I'm sure of that. Gosh, I just wish for once these people would get some backbones before it is too late.

is a nice subtle way to let a senator know when they need to stay in bounds.

2. It's going to take time to find someone worse than Rummy
That seems to be the policy... replace the terrible people with someone even worse and with even greater conflicts of interest.

Maybe they'll try Kerik again...

Wolfowitz would replace Rumsfeld. He'd be even worse.

Is it just me, or does the Comb-Licker look like Dracula? All he needs is a cape & some pointy teeth.

3. Kudos to Carl Levin
Seated next to Warner and answering the same question on 'Meet the Press'.

To paraphrase, he said that since the problem is the policies and the policies come from Chimp, changing Rumsfeld without removing the Chimp would not solve the problem.

4. Couldn't they immediately replace him with a house plant?
Or a lump of mud? Or a duck-billed platypus?

I can't conceive that any of these items could possibly make for a worse Defense Secretary, and they cost less too.

Do they really believe that keeping Rumsfeld around will result in smooth elections in Iraq?

We are not a democracy or even close to it. Money rules. If you ain`t got enough of it to play the game you are toast. This house and senate that is coming into power. Will be the worst yet. Mark my words. More privilege for the wealthy. And less rights for the poor.

9. It's probably best that Rummy stays...
The Iraqatastrophe is just going to get worse, and might blow up into a rout of untold dimensions; anyone intervening to "fix" the problem will be blamed for its flaring up. Yeah, this is the defeatist talk of a critic, but it must be abundantly clear who's failing.

Sadly, all these theoretical maneuverings will be paid in untold lives and the degradation of those who survive: homelessness, disease, poisoning, injuries, fixated (and justified) hatred and deep despair.

We are bad now, and it will take decades to undo this somewhat; sadly, it can never be fully undone. And yet, so many Americans blissfully think we're "good", and actually feel put-upon by a jealous world.

Keep Rummy. Let him fail spectacularly and go down lying, distorting and blaming everyone; it's the only way.

12. Was anyone else amazed at this statement?
"Rumsfeld should be held accountable and he should stay in office".

Why would anyone believe that after all that's happened, to expect RumsFailed to "stay in office" and fix his mistakes? Has he done anything similar up till now? What makes anyone believe he will do so? Why does anyone believe he CAN?

Here's a hint: during RumsFool's visit to Kuwait last week, when he met with the troops and all hell broke loose, here's what he said a little earlier,

"It's early i the morning. I'm an old man". This is so typical RumsFathead. He loves the glory when things are going well. But when things turn south, he whines and cries.

I believe the man should be ousted TODAY. THIS AFTERNOON. Who cares what comes afterwards? Why should we worry about ousting the "devil known"? I've seen this so many times.

15. A War Criminal..
Who is the Commander In Chief? Rep. Charles Rangle drew up the charges so the paper work is ready. The Impeachment Hearings of Rumsfailed should proceed ASAP.

Rumsfailed Admitted to Violating Geneva Convention

Rumsfailed admitted in public on TV that when CIA Director Tenet requested that an Iraqi prisoner be sent to a secret Afghan/US Prison that Rumsfailed did so. After four months a DOD Attorney stated that this was an illegal act. Rumsfailed then ordered that this prisoner be sent back to Abu Graihib but the prisoner was purposefully not listed at that location, also an illegal act. Rumsfeld also admitted to signing orders for tougher interogation methods which violated the Geneva Conventions.

Rumfailed has commited at least three violations of the Geneva Convention thereby also violations of The Constitution of the USA. Recently it has been found out that even more detainees were "ghost detainees". The fact that Rumsfailed and Tenet have not been charged speaks volumes. If Congress wishes to garner any respect they should move forward with Rep. Rangle's Impeachment Declaration of Rumsfailed and also proscecute Ex. CIA Tenet.

Q: Senator Jack Reed (Dem, RI): "If you were shown
a video of a United States Marine or an American
citizen in control of a foreign power, in a cell block,
naked with a bag over their head, squatting with their
arms uplifted for 45 minutes, would you describe that
as a good interrogation technique or a violation of
the Geneva Convention?"

A: Marine Gen. Peter Pace, the vice chairman of the
Joint Chiefs of Staff: "I would describe it as a violation."

A: Paul D. Wolfowitz, the deputy secretary of defense: "What
you've described to me sounds to me like a violation of the
Geneva Convention."

Does the US, Govt., Congress, and the Justice Dept no longer abide by the Geneva Convention or the Constitution of the USA?

24. After rethinking this, I really don't think Rumsfeld will leave, or be...
...allowed to resign. That, on some level, would be an admission by this administration that Iraq has gone over like a fart in church, an unmitigated failure. I don't think they're capable of admitting failure.

35. My theory: Rummy gets to stay until after the Iraq election
If I were Bush (well, if i were Bush, I'd have confessed all and asked my electors to vote for Kerry, but that's another scenario), I'd see how the elections turn out.

If there's a way to spin the violence that will almost certainly accompany the end-of-January festivities as "growing pains" and make it seem like this was a necessary step in the democratization of Iraq, I'd keep Rummy on.

OTOH, if the election bloodbath is such that most of my own party is publicly calling for a shakeup, I'd keep the medal of freedom option in my back pocket. "Donny, you done good, but I understand your health is failing..."

Like Iraq, Afghanistan (still propping up Karzai) and the new resort spots Iran and Syria, They will start making noises that we need to "stay the course" with the leadership that brought us to this dance, thus we should change the constitution yto allow BUSHCO to remain in office until Terra is "defeated"...

Rumsferatu is the trial balloon.

38. Hold him accountable *and* leave him in office?
First off, no one in the administration of the great and wondrous Chimpus Khan is ever held accountable for anything. It simply isn't done.

Second, how would one be held accountable for what Rumsfailed's done and still retain his office? Here are some possibilities that occur to me:

Stay after Pentagon and write 100 times on the glass war board "I will do a better job of invading next time."

Attend Saturday Pentagon for six weeks.

Be declared ineligible for the Pentagon intramural basketball team for the rest of the season.

Be forced to skip lunch for one week and work at letter signing instead.

I dunno ... what else might accountability look like ..... ?
