'Red' States Growing Faster Than 'Blues'

Fastest growth found in 'red' states

By Haya El Nasser and Paul Overberg, USA TODAY

"Robust population growth continues to sweep the nation's Southern and Western states, according to estimates released Wednesday by the Census Bureau.

If the trend continues at its current pace, states in the Northeast and Midwest that have been population powerhouses since the 19th century will lose their dominance to Sun Belt states by 2010."

...more

"Seats in the House of Representatives are reallocated every 10 years to reflect population shifts. The next round will come after the 2010 Census.

Based on the latest population estimates, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana each would lose a House seat, according to Kim Brace, president of Election Data Services, a Washington D.C., consulting firm that specializes in the Census and redistricting. Arizona, Florida, Texas and Utah each would gain a seat, he says.

'It's the New America," Frey says. 'It's taking population and political clout from the highly urbanized Old America.'"

2. One thing to consider
Is that Blue staters are moving to these other states. Arizona, NM, NC and others are getting bluer.

5. Not to mention that as red states become more populous
they will naturally become more liberal. That's just what happens when diverse groups start mingling with each other.

4. Yeah, but if the change is from migration
Red states can turn purple or even blue. Especially AZ and FL.

One neglected problem - the 2000 Census significantly under-counted minorities and statistical corrections were rejected. I have no idea how many House seats and Electoral Votes that cost us due to mis-apportionment.

6. Water will become more and more of a problem in many of these areas
As will the energy demands for air conditioning. I don't know how much I would trust simple population projections that do not take environmental factors into account.

14. If Recession & dollar plunge continues...the Red will ALL turn Blue
due to lack of money, jobs, draft-age sons and daughters, and civil rights.

Only then will many "see the light" that they've been following the wrong leaders...one who've never had their interests at heart.

23. Alabama is the model for the future of America.
...no unions to speak of
...low wages
...low taxes
...limited public services
...limited investment in human capital
...low regulation of business
...intrusive regulation of individuals

They've got pole position in the great race to the bottom.
