Germany ups aid to $900m
German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder has confirmed his country will give almost $900 million dollars for tsunami relief.

The increase makes Germany the biggest international donor so far.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair has also flagged a much greater contribution from his Government.

"My estimate is that we will end up needing to spend probably several hundred million pounds," he said.

"So we will far and away more than match the generosity of the British people, that has been remarkable."

Public and private contributions to tsunami relief now total over $4 billion.

7. Sounds like a competition to spend - and that's good.
But it matters a lot how that money is spent. There are a lot of agencies and organizations with their hands out. Let's see if the money is spent wisely.

10. I somehow doubt that concern for how the money is spent...
is the cause of President Bush's 'fiscal caution'.

13. As I recall, Germany has a population of around 85 million. Hmm.
That means on a per-capita basis they are being MUCH more generous that some other nation states which shall not be mentioned.

14. Is the US still at the embarrassing $350 million contribution level?
I'd like to see France match Germany. This is the EU's time to fill the world leadership vacuum left by the US. They shouldn't squander it.
