Schwarzenegger Calls for Spending Cuts
Schwarzenegger Calls for Spending Cuts

Thu Jan 6, 4:41 AM ET

By TOM CHORNEAU, Associated Press Writer

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (news - web sites) used his second State of the State speech to call for spending cuts — not tax hikes — in order to close an $8.1 billion deficit, pleading with lawmakers to "ignore the lobbyists."

Schwarzenegger ordered a special legislative session to start Thursday to tackle a list of proposals that could be put before voters in a special election in early summer.

"Political courage is not political suicide," the Republican governor said Wednesday. "Ignore the lobbyists. Ignore the politics. Trust the people."

7. I think that he is a goon
He is a fascist pig, not unlike the Bushco. He has taken more money form special interests groups that any other governor in the history of California. He takes their money, doles out favors to those who donate and uses his bully pulpit to define any group who opposes him as a 'special interest group'. Recently he referred to the Nurses Union as a special interest group as they were protesting his proposed cuts in required nursing staff levels.

He has found that the combination of his movie star appeal and the millions he has raised from special interest groups enables him to circumvent the legislature, in which the democrats hold a majority. He bypasses them with special elections and ballot propositions because he knows that the legislature won't go along with his spending cuts and favors to big businesses like the oil industry.

If you truly support this asshole, then either you haven't been paying attention, or you belong on another discussion board.

18. yeah--
now teachers are 'special interest groups'----as well as Rod Paige's 'terraists' !

Arnie says he's going to 'the people'if he doesn't get his way. Does that sound a bit like it's coming from his 'county of origin'? Know what I mean?

( I'm a retired teacher. Where is my huge pension?

3. At least he's willing to let the phrase "spending cuts" escape his lips.
Most republicans these days adhere to the crimial fraud of claiming that we can reduce taxes for all enternity, with no spending cuts.

5. That's very true.
You won't hear Bushler talking about spending cuts ever, just "tax relief."

12. but what does he want to cut?
He wants to ransack the state employees pension fund, which is projected by some to cost more than he saves in the long run. He wants to outsource jobs in state government. This was a failure during Pete Wilson's term and it will fail this time. It will work out handsomely for his contributors who will own the companies that farm the work out to India. Privatizing the pension fund will work out very nicely for the financial institutions, but not for the taxpayers or for the employees. He wants to cut spending by eliminating boards and commissions that are in place to oversee the behavior of corporations that contribute to him.

but what does a taxpayer want to hear? They want to hear 'no tax increase' and 'cut government spending'. They are ignorant to the end result, like damage to the environment, increased energy costs, increased food costs, etc.

We get the government we deserve and if the average citizen in California is stupid enough to fall for this horseshit, they deserve to eat it.

4. I have no problem with him cutting some of the state boards
the members shouldn't be receiving $100K for meeting how every many time a year

it's outrageous

BUT, the people will be the ones to suffer if things like education, public services, etc are cut

and people realize that

14. he reinstated a decrease in the cost of....
vehicle registration that was enacted for three years and expired right when he came into office. The wealthy save a few hundred buck a year with this decrease, the less fortunate save a few bucks. They auto dealers benefit the most.

He hasn't accomplished anything with the exception of raising more money than any other California governor, and helping out his contributors.

He is a total pig.

22. i'm glad someone else actually looked at their renewal form
"tripling of the car tax" was such a load of crap. if people actually looked at their renewal fees, they'd see that a tripling would not necessarily amount to much (my vlf at the time was $9, so i would have paid $27.) oh sure for a brand new lexus it might be a couple hundred. people have no effing concept of cost-benefit.

13. Maseter Orwellian
According to Arnold "special interests" are the nurses. Because he reversed his promise of providing more nurses to carry the burden in our hospitals, he called them "special interests" and bragged that he "kicked their butts".

Pump the gas, keep the poor uneducated and the ill untreated. Ignore the needs of patients and students. They're lobbyists now, not citizens.

Thanks Arnold.

20. More people voted No (ie, for Davis) or for someone other than Arnold than
voted for Arnold.

That's why he didn't run in an open race.

This was the only way he could really get "elected."

And it took 24-7 whoring by the media to help him win.

24. One of the more incredible moments was the debate Arnold did not...
...participate in.

Rather than the evening news talking about what the participants actually talked about, the lead story on all the stations was, "what did Arnold think of the debates."

Who needs to actually debate when the media is uterly willing to present reality through your eyes no matter what you do.

It was sick.

23. whatdayamean, haven't you seen his movies....
Actually not that many did vote for him. It was really a race between a very unpopular incumbent, who only a year prior had won an a real general election, and a movie star.

And... the movie star only needed to get the majority of the votes once the incumbent didn't get over 50%. It was a back door election scam.

But don't ever underestimate the gullibility of the average high school graduate. And don't underestimate the power of a well financed television ad campaign.
