Fury as Hoon sends more Scots to Iraq
FURY AS HOON SENDS MORE SCOTS TO IRAQ Jan 11 2005
400 set for warzone election
By Pippa Crerar

HUNDREDS more Scottish troops were sent to Iraq last night after fears of a bloody increase in violence before the country's elections.

Around 400 soldiers from the 1st battalion Royal Highland Fusiliers will be in Basra within days. It is just six months since their last deployment in Iraq.

The announcement, by Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon, sparked a furious reaction.

It came just weeks after he confirmed the six Scottish infantry units would be scrapped.

The SNP's Pete Wishart accused the Government of betraying the soldiers.

The North Tayside MP said: 'It is a disgrace that as the Highland Fusiliers will be heading off to do a difficult task in Iraq, the Government are planning to amalgamate their regiment out of existence.

'They deserve so much more from a Government that is preparing to send them into harm's way.'

1. Little off the subject

but estimate is there should be 500,000 in Iraq to make things work. We need 350,00 to meet that. Britain adds 400, Ukraine takes out 600. Net we need 350,200.
Are the privateers counted as troops? The 20,000 mercenaries?

2. Which Subject?
"make things work"...

Make what work? Dispose of WMDs, place a Puppet in power, pacify Iraqis, watch a handful of Iraqis vote in 'green zones'...

Our warlords haven't given us a clear signal lately as to what they are doing other than 'prepping' for the Bush fete and re-deploying 'crisis' management for domestic management issues.

I assume Tony is safe for the next election, so he can do anything he wants...

That's the beauty of dictatorships

4. I had heard that 400 more from the UK would be sent before the
election. I guess these are the 400.

5. Why? Why? Why??!!
This is absolutely crazy...sending more troops to Iraq is like putting out a fire with gas. It seems to me that the only thing sending more troops accomplishes is that there are more targets for the insurgents to shoot at.

Let's pull the troops out, impeach Bush, and get on with our lives. How much longer will this lunacy continue?

6. scots have been england's cannon fodder for 200 years
Why change now? The political will comes from belgravia, the blood
and guts from Perth. Blair doesn't care, he is a war criminal and
it does not matter if he kills a few more... he's lost it, but he
don't care... his only concern is the history books, not the lives
he's taking.

Since the english put down the rebellion of bonnie prince charlie at
colloden, it has been a macdonald's world... (the macdonalds were the
betrayers of the other clans of the highlands fighting on the side
of the royalists).... and the highland regiments have been seen
as expendible ever since.

I wish i were wrong... just a silly blogger making shit up, but it
seems rather i tell an uncomfortable truth.
