State loses 25,000 payroll jobs

December decrease bucks the national trend. Biggest decline comes in trade, transportation and utilities.
By Alex Veiga
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

California's economy lost 25,000 payroll jobs last month, a trend that countered modest national payroll employment growth during the same period, according to figures released Friday by the state.

The biggest net job decline occurred in the trade, transportation and utilities sector, which shed a seasonally adjusted 16,400 jobs in December, said Suzanne Schroeder, an EDD spokeswoman. The sector includes retail employees.

Stephen Levy, senior economist at the Palo Alto-based Center for Continuing Study of the California Economy, speculated that the larger than usual decline in the number of retail jobs for the holidays was to blame for the month's net job losses.

Nationally, U.S. employers added 157,000 workers to their payrolls in December. In November, California added a revised 18,300 payroll jobs.

8. Eventually, it creates homeless people.
Costs rise, jobs disappear. Prosperity is not just around the corner.

Boeing Is Closing an Era in Aviation
The firm will shutter a Long Beach line, the last locally that assembles commercial airliners.
By Peter Pae
Times Staff Writer

January 15, 2005

Boeing Co. said Friday that it would shut the last production line making commercial jetliners in Southern California, marking the end of an era for a region once synonymous with the manufacture of aircraft.

After the last of Boeing's slow-selling 717s is delivered next year, the company will close one of its giant Long Beach factories.

The move should have only a modest economic effect. Most of the 300 assembly line workers at the plant will be transferred to other union jobs at another Boeing factory in Long Beach that builds C-17 transports for the military. Less clear is the fate of 500 salaried employees.

An additional 1,700 employees at the factory overhaul and maintain Boeing-built aircraft. They are expected to retain their jobs.

"It's obviously a sad day for California and for Long Beach in particular," said Long Beach City Councilman Dan Baker. "I hate to see it go … because we're losing a big part of our history."

3. minimum number to add: 210,000 - number actually added 157,000 =
a net loss of more than 50,000 jobs.

7. That is okay, the state govt. added 40,000 to it's payroll last year.
That is Arnold's (rather Pete Wilson's) way of reducing the cost of State Government.
