Appeals Court Upholds Indiana Gay Marriage Ban

http://www.chicagotribune.com
The Indiana Court of Appeals ruled Thursday that the state's law banning gay marriages can stand.

The ruling rejected a challenge by three homosexual couples to a 1997 state law prohibiting the state from recognizing same-sex marriages, even those that take place in states where it is legal.

``What we decide today is that the Indiana Constitution does not require the governmental recognition of same-sex marriage, although the Legislature is certainly free to grant such recognition or create a parallel institution under that document,'' the court said in its ruling.

1. I wonder how much money has been spent by the state(s)

worrying about what people do on their own time? Why do these anti-big-government types care so much?

As for the property issues and other rights associated with marriage, gays and lesbians can attain them by simply legally adopting each other, or writing a will...so it's not like these Republican imbiciles are stopping anything.

3. well actually
they're trying to remove any contract or benefit that might be construed to belong to a married couple.

That means that in spite of mutual adoptions (very costly and legally tricky) and in spite of rock solid last wills, the state can step their happy ass in and take everything anyway.

These people in general are going out of their way to go FAR past the marriage issue, as if it might suddenly make everyone who is gay CHOOSE to be straight and run out and get married.

The stupidity and downright meanness is mind boggling.

4. Liberal Christians... NOW Is Your Chance!!
Edited on Thu Jan-20-05 01:45 PM by arwalden
This was a law that was crafted to discriminate against homos and to appeal to the fundie Christians and their "traditional families" crusade. These Christians got what they wanted, and the appeals court agreed that discrimination was okie-diddly-okey.

But recently, I've heard a lot of encouraging reports on DU about all these LIBERAL Christians who embrace our cause and who are equally outraged at the actions of (or on behalf of) rightwing-Christians to make second-class citizens out of gays.

And now the homosexual minority (and their friends) will complain loudly and work to undo this faith-based discrimination. If what we hear is true, then our minority voices will be joined with a CHORUS of liberal Christians who are equally outraged.

I look forward to hearing about the liberal Christian leaders and liberal Christian groups who will rally around this cause. If they truly exist in the great numbers I've heard-tell about, then the outcry in Indiana against this type of faith-based discrimination should be deafening!

In the past, I've often faulted the liberal Christians for being complacent and doing nothing and saying nothing. Others around here have chastized me for doing that and have assured me that I'm wrong.

Many of the posts I've read recently suggest to me that the liberal Christians might have a collective backbone and that they could actually DO SOMETHING to counter the actions made on behalf of their fundie brothers and sisters.

Now's their chance! Who BETTER to mount a counter-attack than the liberal wing of the SAME group that was originally fighting FOR these laws and bans?

We are truly living in an exciting time, eh! I'm eagerly awaiting the support of liberal Christians. With the support of liberal Christians and their church leaders that's certain to come... I'm confident that these laws will be overturned with record speed.
