BASRA, Iraq (Reuters) - An explosion at the entrance to a logistics base in British-controlled southern Iraq has wounded several British soldiers and Iraqi civilians, a British military spokesman says.

The attack occurred on Thursday afternoon at an entrance to the Shaibah logistics base about 10 km (6 miles) west of Basra, Iraq's second largest city, in the far south of Iraq.

"An explosion occurred near the entrance to the Shaibah logistics base," a British military spokesman said. "Several Iraqi civilians and UK military personnel have suffered injuries and are being treated at a British military hospital."

Attacks on British bases in Basra are common, with insurgents frequently firing mortars at camps in the city. It was not immediately clear what caused Thursday's blast.
