Cities continue prayers despite ruling

The City Council meeting began with a prayer.

"Lord Jesus, we'd like to give you thanks and praise," Rialto Councilman Joe Sampson said.

Sampson's words at the Dec. 7 meeting are a double-edged sword truth to Christians but not necessarily to all in the Council Chambers. To local governments, they are a legal liability.

Twenty months after the U.S. Supreme Court let stand a ruling that bars religion-specific prayers at government meetings, many cities continue to allow them.

It's yet another issue in the ongoing church-state debate. During the past year, people of all beliefs have been united, at least philosophically, in their zeal to practice what they preach not what others impose.

I hope these cities get sued AND that they have to spend millions in taxpayer's money defending (and losing) the cases. If citizens want to keep voting selfish, irresponsible representatives in, then they can damn well pay for it. Over and over.

after all - they're the ones who are setting the example.
