Senator opposes presence of US spies in RP

Wednesday, January 26, 2005
Manila Sun Star

SENATE Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel has objected to the presence of American spies allegedly operating in Mindanao. Pimentel said that American military presence and operations in the Philippines amy subvert the country's sovereignty.

...

Pimentel said US military and intelligence activities here are part and parcel of the Bush doctrine, which calls for the annihilation of terrorists wherever they are.

In that connection, Pimentel said the government should demand the extradition of Michael Meiring, an American national, who was involved in a bomb explosion in Davao City Hospital on May 16, 2002 and has since left the country under mysterious circumstances.

...

He suspected that there may not only be 70 American spies operating in Mindanao, as confirmed by US Ambassador Francis Ricciardone.

RP solons slam new US spy teams

Editor's Note: Published on page A1 of the Jan. 26, 2005 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer

TOP LAWMAKERS in the Philippines and the United States yesterday questioned the creation by Washington of new battlefield spy teams for clandestine missions, including counterterrorism operations, in foreign countries. Senate Minority leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr. expressed concern over the move by the US Department of Defense, and backed a proposal by opposition Senator Rodolfo Biazon for the setting up of an "oversight intelligence committee" to look into the report.

Pimentel called for an inquiry into the creation of the new US espionage units while citing the case of an American who left the country in May 2002 while facing charges of possessing an explosive in Davao.

Pimentel related the case of one Michael Meiring who was hurt when a bomb exploded in his hotel room in Davao. He said he found it curious that three US Federal Bureau of Investigation agents and the US vice consul visited Meiring in the hospital.

"How come an individual would attract the attention of FBI agents and the vice consul?" he asked.

After being discharged from the hospital, Meiring left Davao on a plane chartered by a certain International Medical Foundation and then flew out to Singapore a week later while he was facing charges of illegal possession of explosives, Pimentel said.

3. Oh yeah, Meiring had an excellent, awful reason.

It's just unmentionable in mainstream American media.

I've written about Meiring a few times on my blog:
