Iraq extends emergency laws by one month

BAGHDAD - Iraq announced on Saturday a one-month extension of the country’s state of emergency, giving the government the right to impose curfews and restrict movement around the country.

“The state of emergency will be extended 30 days with the exception of Kurdistan, on the expiration of the last decree promulgated on January 8,” the Iraqi government statement read.

The text justified the renewal based on the “persistance” of rebel activity in the run up to the historic January 30 election.

The emergency law was first signed on November 7 for 60 days on the eve of the US assault on the former rebel-stronghold of Fallujah.
