Schwarzenegger Loses Paper's Endorsement
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=3&u=/ap/20031004/ap_on_el_gu/davis_recall

By JEREMIAH MARQUEZ, Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES - Arnold Schwarzenegger sought to shake off allegations of sexual misbehavior that cost him at least one newspaper endorsement Saturday as he and the other gubernatorial candidates leaped into their final weekend of campaigning.

The Oakland Tribune withdrew its endorsement of Schwarzenegger on Saturday, saying the sexual harassment allegations indicate "a pattern of recurring abuse and boorish behavior that in different circumstances could have led to assault charges."

"By no stretch of the imagination can his groping and grabbing on 'rowdy movie sets' be dismissed as an isolated incident," the newspaper said.

26. a lot in common
Jerry and Arnold have a lot in common on a lot of different levels. I've heard rumors that the mayor can be 'overly friendly' at times. He's also a money grubbing ass. But, hey, that's just my opinion.

5. my favorite part
of the story:

In a report for Saturday editions, the Times said three more women came forward Friday with allegations the actor grabbed or groped them. The actor's campaign denied two of the claims — alleged incidents on the set of the 1988 movie "Twins" — and would not comment on the third.

"No one confronted me," Schwarzenegger said Friday. "If someone comes to me and says, `How dare you do this, how dare you say this,' I can apologize right then and there."

there. that settles it. apologizing makes it all okay.

ignorance of the law is still no excuse, arnold.

No big surprise there.. Newspaper's interests' not often with those of its readers.. The owner of the San Diego Union Tribune, I understand has a big interest in Nursing Homes.

A newspaper with a sense of ethics! I can only hope this is the first of many withdrawals of endorsements.

(Edited to add this: Please vote this a 5 to get it high on Yahoo's list of top stories)

10. Man bites dog
A newspaper endorsing a candidate is not news.

A newspaper endorsing a candidate and then withdrawing that endorsement is.

Let's hope more than a few people notice. Unfortunately, there aren't that many people in northern Alameda County (Oakland and Berkeley) where the Trib has the bulk of its circulation who were going to vote for Arnold in the first place.

It's specifically about the News Supress :)

It's when I was dressed like Cheney and rode around in a 1937 Rolls Royce throwing 911 deception dollars to the crowd of about 350 for over an HOUR on STATE STREET and the NEWS PRESS DIDN'T SEE IT.

18. I sent out some letters
I just wrote the following. It would probably be better from a CA resident, so if anyone wants to plagiarize feel free:

To the Editor:

Sitting here in one of the forty-nine states that has better things to than have another election, I'm astounded at the enthusiasm that seems to exist in California for Arnold Schwarzenegger. If you're so worried about the budget deficit, why are you going to give the most powerful position in your state to someone who does not have any experience? Don't you think the special interests in your state are going to manipulate him with their lawyers and lobbyists? Would you hire him to manage your own finances? Maybe you think he's really brilliant, but to me he comes across as slow and thickheaded. What other jobs do you think he'd be good at besides actor, bodybuilder, and the person to manage a $38 billion debt!

The original endorsement from the Oakland Tribune contains piss-poor reasoning:

http://www.oaklandtribune.com/Stories/0,1413,82~1761~1662837,00.html

They admitted he has zero political experience but yet they endorsed him based on his professed desire to "help" Caliofornia. They admitted that Pete Wilson and others from the Wilson administration are behind Ah-nold but they bought the groper's assurances that "On Oct. 8, it won't be Governor Pete Wilson...it will be Governor Arnold." That's like Bush* assuring the plebes that he'll be in charge, not Rove, not Crash Cart Cheney, not the rest of the retreads from Poppy's admin. Yeah, right.

Their original endorsement seemed to be based on nothing but the editorial board being star struck over Ah-nold's platitudes about state government.

To the paper's credit, they withdrew their endorsement. But they never should have endorsed this pig in the first place.

15. Something about that bothers me...
The Oakland Tribune withdrew its endorsement of Schwarzenegger on Saturday, saying the sexual harassment allegations indicate "a pattern of recurring abuse and boorish behavior that in different circumstances could have led to assault charges."

Different Circumstances??????

Meaning if Arnie was a supporting player, gaffer, a Democrat, a black man, or anyone but a Big-Budget Gun-Toting Right-Wing Aryan Movie Star, there would be assault charges?????

I say there should be someone pressing charges!

22. And here's another lost endorsement:
http://www.sanmateocountytimes.com/Stories/0,1413,87~11305~1676505,00.html

The San Mateo County Times, part of the regional Alameda Newspaper Group, has reversed its endorsement of Schwarzenegger tonight. Enjoy:

"Schwarzenegger no longer worthy

GIVEN the accusations of sexual abuse leveled against Arnold Schwarzenegger by six women and his disingenuous admission to such behavior, we strongly reconfirm that our readers vote "no" on the recall, but can no longer recommend they cast their 'if-not-Davis-then' vote for Schwarzenegger.

As stated in our initial recommendation last week, "none of the ... candidates still in the race fit our ideal criteria for governor." Although deeply divided on the second part of the ballot question, the ANG Newspapers editorial board initially recommended voting for Mr. Schwarzenegger because of his perceived leadership ability and blend of moderate social and conservative fiscal stands.

Although allegations of his abusive and disrespectful behavior toward women had surfaced earlier, the latest revelations reported in the Los Angeles Times and Schwarzenegger's convenient, but seemingly insincere admission that "I have behaved badly sometimes," alienates a significant proportion of the state's population, male and female.

It indicates a pattern of recurring abuse and boorish behavior that in different circumstances could have led to assault charges. By no stretch of the imagination can his groping and grabbing on "rowdy movie sets" be dismissed as an isolated incident. .........."
