Davis Poll Shows Recall Race a 'Jump Ball'
Davis Poll Shows Recall Race a 'Jump Ball'

By Steve Gorman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - On the day before California voters decide whether to throw him out of office, Democratic Gov. Gray Davis (news - web sites)'s campaign said on Monday a new internal poll shows the recall race in a dead heat as support softens for Republican rival Arnold Schwarzenegger.

As Schwarzenegger remained mired in allegations of sexual misconduct, the Davis camp said a tracking survey of 1,200 likely voters from Friday through Sunday found an almost even split, 50 percent to 48 percent, between those favoring a "yes" vote on the recall and those planning to vote "no."

The margin of error, according to the Davis camp, was plus or minus 4 points.

"It's a jump ball," Gabriel Sanchez, a spokesman for Davis, told reporters. "What we've seen over the (past) three days is support growing a lot among some among men, but more among women."

4. But we got many of the absentee votes out
Unions were big on getting people to vote absentee. Don't make that mean anything.

8. I just voted absentee for the first time.
I suspect that people who vote absentee are people who have firm ideas and nothing is going to sway them. I knew I was going to vote no on the recall and yes on Bustamante right away and there would be no swaying me against it. I got my ballot in the same day, no looking back. I don't think that those earlier voters would have gone for Davis even if the ass-grabber stories had come out three weeks ago. I'm not worried too much about the two million ballots. The only thing that matters is who comes out tomorrow. There is some belief out there that some Democrats whose wind had initially gone out of their sails might be energized to get out and vote because of the Arnie the Octopus deal. What say you all?

11. There's also a lot of Republicans voting NO on the recall
that are voting for Arnold on the second half of the ballot. The press has been curiously silent about that.

10. I'm holding hope for CA
Arnold the predator must not win the race. I am thinking huge positive thoughts for CA. I am visualizing that Davis will hold the line and manage to stay in office. Also I am hopeful that all these women that came forward will continue to speak out, no matter what the outcome. Arnold should be held accountable for this abuse.

12. See
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=482604&mesg_id=482604

If that Washington Post article is any indication then I fear that the voters will not care about Arnold's womanizing. What I find sad is how a young woman in that article reacts.

15. freeper woman?
My sister and I went to the rally in Sacramento today and we were both intereviewed by a tv reporter from LA probably because we had the "remarkable women for Arnold" signs.

The only thing the reporter wanted to know was how we felt about the accusations against Arnold.

One really rude man came along and told my sister "You've got big boobs, he (meaning Arnold) would probably grope you."

Not good.

My sister told that rude guy off and the reporter ran him off.

Quite a day.

14.  According to the Knight Ridder/NBC Poll
Support for recall has dropped to 44 percent. :toast:

"In the final hours of California's recall campaign, new polls indicate Governor Davis may yet get to keep his job.

Californian voters on Tuesday face a two-part ballot that asks if Mr. Davis should be recalled from office, and if so, who should replace him.

A Knight Ridder/NBC news poll found the percentage of voters who will definitely vote to recall Governor Davis dropped from 52 percent last week to 44 percent Saturday. The number of undecided voters climbed four points to 12 percent in the same period.

The slipping support for the recall follows recent allegations from 15 women that leading Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger touched them inappropriately during separate incidents over a number of years."

20. knight-ridder poll reveals an alarming factor.
Only 44% of those polled say they will vote to oust Davis, but 54% say that they support the recall. This demonstrates that around 10-7% of the voters don't understand that a vote in favor of the recall is a vote against Davis. Many many be saying that they support the recall, and then hope to vote for Davis as their candidate.

Hopefully the other poll, that says only 50% or less support the recall, is correct.
