Gubernatorial Candidate Roughed up At Arnold Rally
Gubernatorial candidate Georgy Russell was pushed, shoved, hit and kicked yesterday by supporters of Arnold Schwarzenegger at a rally in Pleasanton CA. She was repeatedly called a "bitch" and one of the Arnold Supporters wrote on her clothing with a permanent marking pen. The felonious abusers, who claimed to be provoked by remarks from Russell, were near equal numbers of men and women and no one during the incident came to Russell's aid. Schwarzeneggar and his wife Maria Shriver witnessed the attack and neither said or did anything to stop the abuse.

Looks like some of the Gropinator's supporters admire Hitler as well, specifically some of the tactics of the S/A.

I think I would look swell in a brown shirt and jack boots. Plus it would be really cool to be able to grope like him.

4. Goddammit, these are things that happen in Banana Republic countries,
not in the USA. What in the hell are the republicans doing to our country?

This reminds me of the attorney in 11-00 who was pushed around and knocked down the stairs by a Bush supporter because they said he put a voting card in his pocket. Turns out it was a SAMPLE card.
I wonder how many of the Arnold supporters are paid plants? Remember in the Selection of 2000, Cia and paid protesters were brought in to "rally" for Chimpy.

32. Sadly, these are exactly the things that happen in the USA
Look at the 1968 Democratic convention, when Mayor Daley had the cops bust Gene McCarthy's campaign headquarters, for example. This country has a LONG way to go in fulfilling the ideals of democratic free speech and equal representation.

22. Wow, I think we would have loved her for Governor!
Quote from Georgy Russell regarding the incident, from her website:

"Some of Arnold's supporters apparently do not hesitate when it comes to using violence to accomplish their goals. It's not surprising that they support and defend a candidate who has manifested poor judgment and aggressive behavior most of his adult life. The behavior exhibited by Arnold's supporters is not simply an aberration, it is an MO that has it's roots at the top; it is reminiscent of the behavior of the thugs that were bussed in by Republicans during the Florida recount to perform much the same role as the bullies of yesterday and while that is no surprise to me I am nonetheless sickened by it all. This bully mentality was exhibited by Arnold in the debate in his rude treatment of Arianna Huffington and that the press offered little to no criticism of his behavior opened the door wide and gave a green light to his supporters to follow suit."

Impressive, I think.

These people genuinely frighten me. I definitely think we will see more of it. Our society is provoking and creating it and the media is condoning it. The fact that Savage or Rush could even land national spots with their vitriol speaks volumes.

26. Yes it is the mainstreaming of hate.
An effort to make brown shirted thuggishness such as this socially acceptable to stifle political opposition.
This is why the Fairness Doctine must be reinstated. It was instrumental in providing an antidote to the bile of Father Coughlin and can be instrumental in providing an antidote to the Limbaughs and the Scarboroughs of today.

28. Indeed. If this is true, it is part of the Limbaugh Legacy
For fifteen years, Rush and his ilk have been allowed to spread their message of HATE unrestricted and without balance (OR fairness). It has so permeated the national consciousness that it's now OK to literally beat up on Libruls (or anyone who's not a knuckle-dragging ConservoBot).

Way to go, Murka!!!!

30. Yep when only one side gets to present its warped view
Edited on Tue Oct-07-03 04:38 PM by benfranklin1776
that its view, however wrong it is, becomes much more widely accepted Its not the majority view
of course since its so extreme, witness the last Presidential election when despite biased coverage Gore still won the popular vote and Florida if the count was allowed to proceed, but it radicalizes the "true blue movement believers" since they find reinforcement for their extreme hateful views and believe that its OK to use whatever means necesssary to silence the opposition. Remember their credo is drawn from that of Goldwater who seems tame by today's standard: "Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice." So if you think that you are defending the nation from the" godless libruls" then anything goes in this way of thinking. A balance of viewpoints would do wonders towards allowing the antidote of truth to counteract their steady venom of hate that is poisoning the body politic.

37. (London) Times: The fascist spectre that stands behind Arnie
see this post in the Editorials forum

<snip>

IF a politician campaigns on the theme of “trust me”, there is only one correct answer, and that is “not on your life”. Tony Blair has entered the inter-governmental conference on the European constitution saying “trust me”. A more immediate issue is that Arnold Schwarzenegger is asking the people of California to trust him in tomorrow’s vote. They would be foolish to do so.

<snip>

What worries me is that Arnold Schwarzenegger is relying on the appeal of fascism, whether or not he is personally a fascist. He does not run on experience. He has been a politician for only eight weeks. He does not run on policy. He relies on catch phrases and on empty generalisation. He does not debate the issues. He has taken part in only one debate, and then relied on frequent references to his old films, which do not deal with economic policy issues. His campaign exists outside rationality, in the world of celebrity and sensation. The politics of mass emotion are the politics of fascism.

The core of all fascist movements is the direct relationship between the leader and the masses, not mediated through the institutions of democracy. What does the leader do? He provides leadership. What allows him to provide leadership? The strength of his will. What is the evidence of the leader’s will? The exciting feeling he creates of ultimate ruthlessness. How does Arnold Schwarzenegger demonstrate this ruthlessness? By having played a machine — not even a man — which killed hundreds of people.

Gray Davis has not been a good governor. One can understand that the people of California want to get rid of him. But, though he may be a ghastly hack, he was democratically elected after a process of public debate, and Democrat majorities in both Houses of the California Congress were elected alongside him. This is now a straight conflict between the democratic principle and the Führer Prinzip (leadership principle), the issue of 1933.

(The London Times is subscription only, unfortunately)
