Texas' redistricting fight becomes Democractic primary issue
Edited on Tue Oct-07-03 09:14 PM by Avalon Sparks
Hi All,

I read this today, in one of the Texas papers, but I couldn't find it. I did find this article from the LA Times from the 4th. that says the same thing. I hadn't seen it here before and thought it important.

HOUSTON — The Republican campaign to draw new congressional districts in Texas has lasted so long and produced so many competing maps that the state might have to postpone primary elections, GOP officials said yesterday.

As a result, Texas voters might lose the chance to help pick a Democratic presidential candidate next spring.

Republican leaders said that in order to wade through the map proposals, all of them generated by members of their party, they are considering postponing the primary election scheduled for March 2.

This statement burned my Texas butt:

If the state has to delay the election, Republican leaders believe the effect would be minimal, Richter said. "You may not be the player in the presidential primary that you would be if it was earlier. But we just feel like that's not a problem."

Edited to add that statement and fix a typo.

3. We're looking at getting bumped off Super Tuesday.
We were added to Super Tuesday a few years ago (3? 7?), so they don't think getting bumped past it will make a big difference.

The Republican leadership said something to the effect that "everyone will be voting for Bush here anyway".

God Damn MF. I can't stand my state leadership. They are cruel to children, hate women, and are disinterested in people with disabilities.

But here in TX, it's nothing out of the ordinary.

These right-wing nuts have become convinced they can do no wrong, and since the majority of Texans keep re-electing these a$$holes, why shouldn't they?

What w/ CA, a state I had some semblance of respect for, (most likely) electing the walnut-stuffed condom to be their Gov. and now the TX Repugs finally out-and-out admitting they have no respect for the right to vote for the citizens of our state I'm feeling more pissed-off and disillusioned than I've felt in a long time.

I hope these totalitarian tactics of the TX Repugs come back to bite them in their rears, but I'm willing to bet the effect on their careers of any of the extreme actions they take will be negligible.

Honestly, though, I'm thinking more and more about deserting this hellhole state when I'm done with college...
