Bush visit to Kentucky draws protesters of war, economic strategy

Republicans leaving Lexington Center in Lexington, Ky., last evening walked into a wall of drum-beating, sign-waving protesters who chanted, "How many homeless people could you have fed tonight?"

Four-letter words were exchanged, and a scowling man in a dark suit hurled a cookie at the protesters before his well-coiffed wife pulled him away by his arm. But Lexington police kept the groups separated; nobody was hurt or arrested.

"Everyone behaved tonight," police Chief Anthany Beatty said.

Hundreds of people lined the downtown streets around President Bush's fund-raising appearance. The crowd, cheerful through most of the evening, was dominated by Bush critics - Democrats, peace activists, union members, students, environmentalists and others. Pockets of Bush supporters called for "Four more years!"

Signs included "One Nation Under Surveillance," "What Good is a Tax Cut Without a Job?" and "Bush Lied, People Died," referring to the war in Iraq and the absence, so far, of the weapons of mass destruction Bush had warned that Iraq possessed.

Bush supporters were not impressed. Jeff Houghton, 42, watched the protesters as he held an American flag and a sign that proclaimed, "We support our president and our troops." "I see a bunch of kids talking about things they don't understand," said Houghton, who designs circuit boards at Lexmark. "They're complaining about lost jobs. I doubt any of them ever held a job."

Um, it's kind of hard to have had a job to lose when you can't f***ing find one in the first place. Life's all nice for you now, but what if Lexmark decides some electrical engineer in India can do your job for 1/6 the money? What then?

....I want to thank the DU participant that suggested the slogan, "it's the corruption stupid"....I proudly displayed it thinking of my moral obligation to many here at DU and their tireless efforts....I regret to say that the KY Governors race is shaping up to be a closer race than need be....The passive direction that the KY Dem. leadership has chosen has infuriated me wrt to exposure of the GOP agenda and its potential impact upon our enviroment as well as our ecocomy....The Ken and Barbie mentality regretfully is alive and well here in the current climate of campaign initiatives directed by our chosen ones(it's a just a job)....as an aside a dear friend just passed away that was the last AP journalist out of Iran after the revolution....I couldn't help but mention this due to holy Pat Robertsons recent remark wrt the State Dept needing to be nuked....Best Wishes from the Bluegrass

I can honestly say that this was the largest political out-pouring of feeling in Lexington since the Viet Nam War.

It felt wonderful!

It's at least encouraging that Lexington police allowed the "free speech zone" to be close enough to make an impact.

cookie, pretzel whatever is grounds for arrest. If a protestor had thrown something, you can bet his/her a$$ would be behind bars right now. Let a right winger do it and it gets a pass. Unbelievable. Peaceful on the part of the protestors, not on the part of the right wingers.
