Berlusconi pushes for more power

ROME, Italy (AP) -- Premier Silvio Berlusconi's government pushed ahead Friday with plans to reform Italy's constitution -- a series of changes that would include increasing the powers of the premier and changing the makeup of parliament.

The government agreed to the changes during a Cabinet meeting Friday, after announcing the proposal last month. The reforms need to be passed in parliament, where four votes -- two in each house -- are required, with a minimum of three months between the first and the second votes in each chamber.

No date has been set for the beginning of the parliamentary procedure, but Berlusconi said last month he hoped the measures would be approved next year.

He already owns almost all of the TV networks. Plus you can include the government owned RAI TV and radio network as well.

If I were Italian, I would be scared to death right now. Next he will have everybody call him "Duce".

I'll be SO happy when this extraordinary Gentleman is no longer my (EU) President. He is an excellent example on why politicians (or anybody else) shouldn't be allowed to own 80% of a nation's media. His stunts give Europe a bad name - calling free courts a tyranny (he dodged several sentences by changing laws/ firing judges); tasteless Nazi comparisons and Mussolini defenses; outlawing Spider imports because of a shop in his neighbourhood; dirty Business tactics; possible Mafia background; destroying the Italian PBS equivalent; incompetence; ...

He just doesn't know when to keep his big mouth shut. As far as I am concerned he should just go back to owning AC Milan and his five TV stations or whatever it is. Leave the politics to those who know what they are doing. He keeps carrying on, he will be the George W.Bush of Europe.

The Italians are over the top. Their gub'mint is over the top. They live in a beautiful environment, eating pure food, screaming at each other at the slightest provocation, men making Arnie look tame, politicos slitting their own throats with stupid comments about those who fuel their tourist economy, can you pour me some more Grappa??? (Did I cover all the stereotypes? ;-)) But we have already seen what happens

Man the world is full of dictators that keep wanting more and more money, power, and it's Never
enough.

What would these big shots do if they were walking in our shoes? Hate to see grown bullies cry :-)

The day will come after they suck us dry, which looks like it won't be too much longer, just what will
these parasites feed off when they have crushed us all up, and there won't be ANYONE left to suck off
except their "coalition of Ha Ha willing" They got to turn on each other, cause they got this hunger.
And do they thinks they caN take all the booty to the after life? Just how much richer and powerful
can a thug get?

I feel lucky to get out of bed alive in the mornings. What I'd give to see how the shoe on the other
foot could put a cap on this madness.
