Pakistan: India Arms Deal Threatens Regional Military Balance
VOA News
11 Oct 2003, 20:41 UTC

Pakistan has vowed to take steps to maintain the military balance in South Asia following India's deal to buy advanced Israeli airborne radar systems.
Pakistani Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasuri says the one-billion dollar deal could trigger a new arms race in the region. He says Islamabad will take all possible measures to counter the threat posed by the Israeli Phalcon airborne radar system. He says balance is essential for peace.

India and Israel signed the arms deal on Friday. The Phalcon radar systems will be mounted on Russian (IL-76) aircraft bought from Moscow.

Pakistan and India have fought three wars since gaining independence in 1947. Tensions between the two nuclear-capable neighbors have eased somewhat this year, but progress towards peace talks between them have stalled, partly because of renewed violence in Indian Kashmir, where Muslim militants are fighting to end New Delhi's rule.
