Chavez urges Columbus Day boycott
Chavez urges Columbus Day boycott
Sunday 12 October 2003, 1:04 Makka Time, 22:04 GMT

The Venezuelan president says
Columbus' historic voyage
is something to rue

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has urged fellow Latin Americans not to mark Columbus Day, calling it a celebration of "genocide".

The 1492 discovery of the Americas triggered a 150-year slaughter of native Indians by foreign conquerors who behaved "worse than Hitler", the populist president told a meeting in Caracas of representatives of Indian peoples from across the continent.

"Christopher Columbus was the spearhead of the biggest invasion and genocide ever seen in the history of humanity,"

Columbus Day on 12 October is celebrated as a holiday in the United States and several Latin American nations, but Chavez said it should be remembered as the "Day of Indian Resistance."

It is has been enough time for me to determine. Also why is he scarier than the known right wing fascist that tried to over throw him.

6. Chavez is the anti-Bush and deserves all our support
there is no such thing (by definition) of a left wing fascist.

The "left wing" is the wing of peace - the olive branch is held by the symbolic eagle on the left side while the bundle of "fasces" are held by the right wing.

Left wingers may use self defense to oppose violence -- but they cannot be equated with fascists who use brute force to gain and maintain their corrupt power.

THAT SAID - there are pseudo leftists who use violence for purely power gaining purposes. But these cannot truly be called leftists.

May the Creator protect Chavez and deliver us from the BFEE

13. wait a minute!
any dictator clutching the "collectivist" umbrella is, in fact, a left-wing fascist. What else to call that honey of a guy Fidel Castro??? Ask all the gays in Cuban prisons about the dove's wings of peace!

And whose celebrating Columbus Day? I've got to go to work like any other monday.

14. The only people I've seen who obsess over Fidel Castro
are right-wing extremists, and usually Miami gusanos.

Could you provide a link for D.U.'ers to ONE article concerning Cuba's imprisoning gay people? It would be worthwhile to have some actual information to back up your charges.

By the way, Cuba has been producing extremely effective drugs to fight AIDs:

(snip) Few stories about HIV/Aids infection bring hope. But in the Caribbean, wher=
e communism takes its last gasp, there is encouragement in the fight agains=
t Aids.

"Cuba has a lid on the HIV/Aids problem," said Byron Barksdale, the directo=
r of the American Cuban Aids Project, a non-profit organisation that provid=
es humanitarian aid to the island.

There has been no dramatic increase in HIV transmission in Cuba since the b=
eginning of the epidemic, said Dr Barksdale at the at the annual meeting of=
the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Denver.

Cuba's 3% infection rate is one of the lowest in the world.

In addition, certain forms of HIV transmission that plague the rest of the =
globe are almost non-existent on the island.

There is virtually no transmission of the virus through intravenous drug us=
e, blood transfusion or to newborns at birth.

Drugs available

The country now produces enough anti-retroviral medicines to supply the cou=
ntry's patients. As a result, the 25% predicted mortality rates for patient=
s with Aids in 2002 were instead 7%. (snip/...)

25. go to Amnesty's website...
you'll see. One doesn't have be a winger, or even a Floridian, to know what Fidel's up to. Lots of folks on the Left look the other way because its politically expedient. Sure wish Cuban were free; they're really hot people!

The AIDS remedies you discuss are predicated on a level of subordinating target populations that most western nations wouldn't tolerate. I wouldn't brag about it.

7. If he is a fascist,
Edited on Sat Oct-11-03 11:34 PM by bemildred
he's sure a non-violent one.

Who's he had killed?

Who's he had thrown in jail?

What opposition parties has he outlawed and had their members
hunted down?

What elections has he had cancelled after passing an enabling law
making him dictator?

What death squads are running around killing his enemies?

He's so nice I am sort of shocked he is doing so well.

22. Yeah. He was young and impatient.
Then he figured it out and went out and got elected.
Twice. First under the old constitution, then again
under the new one.

And now they have tried to overthrow him, at least two
major efforts, and they are probably working on #3
right now.

I'm not saying he does not deserve watching, all politicians
deserve watching. Power corrupts. But on the record he has
behaved remarkably well.

8. Pallast says he's a moderate who would have fit nicely into JFK's
Alliance for Progress model for development.

And, hey, where the hell do you get your news? CBS??

There's already enough evidence out there for you to figure out what he is.

We're the fascists, here.

If anything, Chavez proves the sad reality that, in '73 the US used to sabotage socialists, but today the right is so afraid of anything threatenight their tenuous grip on reality, that they have to sabotage moderates like Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Blair, Gerhard Schroeder, Gray Davis and Chavez.

There aren't any socialists or "left wing fascists" (an idiotic oxymoron) in the world. That doesn't stop the US from acting like fascists.

9. Neil Young - Cortez The Killer
He came dancing across the water
With his galleons and guns
Looking for the new world
In that palace in the sun.

On the shore lay montezuma
With his coca leaves and pearls
In his halls he often wondered
With the secrets of the worlds.

And his subjects gathered 'round him
Like the leaves around a tree
In their clothes of many colors
For the angry gods to see.

And the women all were beautiful
And the men stood straight and strong
They offered life in sacrifice
So that others could go on.

Hate was just a legend
And war was never known
The people worked together
And they lifted many stones.

They carried them to the flatlands
And they died along the way
But they built up with their bare hands
What we still can't do today.

And i know she's living there
And she loves me to this day
I still can't remember when
Or how i lost my way.

He came dancing across the water
Cortez, cortez
What a killer.

12. SIEMPRE HASTA LA VICTORIA
I am a sincere man, from where the palm grows,
And before dying, I want to share the poems of my soul,
My poem is of a clear light green, And a fiery bright red,

My poem is a wounded stag, Seeking shelter in the wilderness,
With the poor of the earth, I want to cast my lot,
A mountain brook pleases me more than the sea.

I cultivate a rose in June and in January for the sincere friend who gives me his hand,
For the cruel one who would tear out this heart with which I live,
I do not cultivate thistles nor nettles, I cultivate a white rose.

16. Don't forget to attribute Cuban poet José Martí, Pocho.
Martí's verse was used in classic songs such as in the classic Guantanamera.

Cultivo una rosa blanca
En Junio como en Enero,
Para el amigo sincero,
Que me da su mano franca.

Y para el cruel que me arranca
El corazón con que vivo,
Cardo ni ortiga cultivo
cultivo una rosa blanca.
