A crew member of the container ship Sea Elegance is missing, presumed dead, after the vessel caught fire following an explosion off Durban on Saturday.
National Sea Rescue Institute operations manager Paul Bevis said the vessel, on its way to Durban from Singapore, caught fire at 7.45am, disabling communications and preventing the crew from contacting harbour control.
Bevis and a team of volunteers were first on board and searched in vain for the missing crewman.
Umhlanga resident Moreen Tregaskis, who watched the drama through a telescope, said she heard an explosion then saw a huge fire.
