Bush to Meet Schwarzenegger in California

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites) will meet California Gov.-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger (news - web sites) on Thursday, but the White House was making no promises on sending new help for the state's economy.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan said on Tuesday Bush would meet Schwarzenegger at a Riverside, California, hotel, their first meeting since the former bodybuilder's election in California's recall battle a week ago.

Schwarzenegger, whose election could help Bush in next year's presidential campaign, said last week he would be asking for a lot of help from the president.

"I'm looking forward to working with him and asking for a lot, a lot of favors," Schwarzenegger said.

McClellan said Bush would be happy to hear from Schwarzenegger, but made no promises.

Due partly to the struggling U.S. economy and the cost of military operations in Iraq (news - web sites), the federal government had a budget deficit of about $374 billion in the fiscal year that just ended and the 2004 deficit could hit $500 billion.
