Daschle Signals More Scrutiny for Bush's $87 Billion Request

Some Democrats are taking a much harder look than first anticipated at President Bush's request for $87 billion for American efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, with Senator John Edwards of North Carolina saying this afternoon that he will vote against it.

"I believe we have a responsibility to support our troops in Iraq," Mr. Edward said in an interview with The Associated Press. "I believe we have a responsibility to help rebuild Iraq. But our troops will not be safer and this mission will never be successful unless the president dramatically changes course."

Mr. Edwards said he was convinced that Mr. Bush "is not going to change direction unless somebody stands up to him and say no," adding, "And for that reason, I plan to vote against the president's plan."

Another Democratic candidate for president, Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts, said on Sunday that he was inclined to vote against the $87 billion request. And a third Democratic presidential candidate, Representative Dennis J. Kucinich of Ohio, has also said he will vote no.

however Congress wants them to. Once the money is allocated, it's too late.

i thnk they should allocate $20B at a time, and make them show how they are spending it before they get more.

Bush needs to admit things are bad enough to warrant 150,000 troops and $87 billion. He is trying to have his cake and eat it too. Either things are just peachy or we need to have 150,000 troops and another $87 billion. Which is it?

Edwards stock just went up with me. Better late then never.
