Navy to Limit Use of Sonar System Which May Harm Dolphins and Whales
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20031014/ap_on_re_us/whales_sonar_4

SANTA MONICA, Calif. - The Navy has agreed to limit its peacetime use of a new sonar system designed to detect enemy submarines, but which may also harm marine mammals and fish, an environmentalist group said.

The Natural Resources Defense Council, which sued the military on the issue, and the Navy reached a settlement last week in which the Navy agreed to use the new system only in specific areas along the eastern seaboard of Asia, according to documents provided by the environmental group.

The agreement must be approved by a federal magistrate to become permanent, but if implemented the deal would greatly restrict the Navy's original plan for the sonar system, which once was slated to be tested in most of the world's oceans.

one thing about sonar I don't understand... why don't enemy subs have a big microphone so they can hear this thing coming?

1. Well that's good news for the dolphins and whales (if it happens) but
what about the elephants, lions, tigers, etc? Oh, I forgot, there's a BIG trade in those endangered species, isn't there. It always comes down to the almighy dollar.

Maybe this clarifies things for you.

Edit: This refers to the thing about why don't subs have mikes to hear this stuff. Of course they do.

4. Are we in "peacetime" now?
I thought the Bush regime has been saying we are at war. Did that end when the chimp strutted across the deck in his flight suit?
