California told to solve its problems, but Bush will listen

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- If Governor-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger is hoping for help cleaning up California's fiscal mess when he meets with President Bush, he may be disappointed.

"I'm sure we'll listen to him, but you know California's problems are basically California's own problems," Treasury Secretary John Snow said in an interview with CBS MarketWatch. "I think California is going to have to solve its own problems rather than turn to the Treasury of the United States." Listen to the interview.

The actor-turned-politician has said he'll ask Bush on Thursday for federal assistance to help alleviate California's multibillion-dollar budget shortfall. California had to borrow and cut costs to close a $38 billion gap covering the last two years, and is looking at a deficit of anywhere between $8 billion and $23 billion for the 2004-05 fiscal year.

At least Schwarzenegger will have Bush's ear about California at a time when the president is focusing on Pacific issues. The two Republicans are scheduled to meet as the president heads to Thailand for a summit of Pacific Rim leaders.

Why not CA. Helping CA will cut into the money he is runnig out of the treasury to himself and being true to thy own self is most important in that regard. Or at least Bush belives so.

But, Bush's hand picked FERC, is letting the thieves of the hook, with no jail time, and small fines amounting to a couple of percent of what they ripped off. Why doesn't Snow address that? Will Arnold address this when he meets with Bush? HA!

good god what has this country come to. Arnie and Dubya meeting to discuss governance? If 2 people were randomly picked from the population of the US, you couldn't collect a lower IQ than these two collectively contribute.

It's about time anyway. How many other democracies around the world have the electoral college?

all the other major democracies have a parliamentary system, which can also produce a leader from a party that doesn't get the most votes.

The French do elect their president directly, and to avoid the situation of many candidates meaning that you could be elected with a small percentage of the total vote, they have a 2nd round face-off of the 2 most popular (unless one gets more than 50% in the 1st round anyway, I think). This produced what was probably the desired result (people vote 'where their heart is' in the 1st round, then 2 moderates from the left and right square off, maybe drifting a little to their fringes if they seem particularly strong that year), until this time, when the far left took enough votes from the socialist to allow the bigot Le Pen to take 2nd place. Much more of a problem for the left than Nader was in the USA. So I don't know if anyone has an obviously perfect system yet.

The electoral college wouldn't be so much of a problem if a form of proportional representation was used by the states - so that California had 28 Democratic, 25 Republican, and 1 Green (or whatever the proportions were) college members. As far as I understand it, any state could choose to do this now, without any federal interference, and a couple of states already do have a method that isn't the 'all or nothing' approach. Presumably any party in power in a state thinks it will be able to win the presidential vote in that state the next time, so doesn't want to dilute the power by giving some electoral college votes to its opposition, so nothing changes. You need some altruistic politicians, willing to give up power before others do. Fat chance.

Then you'd just be left with the over-representation of the lower population states.

This is really funny. They put the actor in the governor's seat for only one thing, to approve the 2% settlement with enron,etc.

Now they leave him out to dry with the california problems that THEY created. By the end of his term, he's gonna be a true pariah to the people of california. He won't be able to gather an audience anymore. What a fate for an actor.

Ahhhnold will tout it as "leadership".. Bush wants a friendly governator for the 2004 election.. I can see his ugly mug now.. smirking at the gala soirees at the governator's mansion..

This is about convincing the "average" voter that dems "cannot get it done" and repubes can.. Governor's office now...state offices next.. It's their recipe for domination.. Why would he quit now..

I don't think Snow is in on The Plan. Or perhaps his statements are just cover for now.

I absolutely believe Bush will "help" California. He's got to have some reason why his popularity and job approval ratings are going to be improving in California, prior to the election which WILL give 54 electoral votes to Bush.

You wait and see.

Better yet, get busy defeating those goddamned voting machines.

Hose them before the convention, by supporting a slate of moderate republicans to run against them all. And fund the campaigns.

Like California is the only state having budget problems. Is Arnold so naive that he thinks CA is the only state with it's problems. Granted it may be one of the worst if not the worst budget problems...

But really, does Arnold think that FI is going to jump up and say, "Ok, Arnold, here's a check.. just fill in any amount you want."

Besides, there ain't no more money because it's all going to Iraq.
