NYT: 9/11 Group Says White House Has Not Provided Files

WASHINGTON, Aug. 6 - The White House has failed to turn over any of the information requested by the 10 members of the disbanded Sept. 11 commission in their renewed, unofficial investigation into whether the government is doing enough to prevent terrorist attacks on American soil, commission members said.

Thomas H. Kean, the former Republican governor of New Jersey who led the bipartisan Sept. 11 commission, said he was surprised and disappointed that the White House, the Pentagon, the State Department, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and several other executive branch agencies had failed to respond to requests made two months ago for updated information on the government's antiterrorism programs.

Mr. Kean said there had been no response of any sort to interview requests for Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld; Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice; Porter J. Goss, the C.I.A. director; Robert S. Mueller III, the F.B.I. director, and Andrew H. Card Jr., the White House chief of staff, among others.

A White House spokeswoman, Dana Perino, would not answer directly when asked if the administration intended to respond to the project's requests for information before next month, when the group is scheduled to publish an updated report that assesses the progress of the government's counterterrorism.

The Bush Crime Team doesn't believe they are accountable to or have to answer to anyone.

They really could care less about keeping us safe, because the more terrorism is a threat, the more they can play the terrorism trump card when the going gets rough for them.

With their attitude, they might as well be spitting on the graves of those who died on 9/11.

They are public servants who are answerable to the American public. I do not understand how they are getting away with their lack of accountablity.

Mike Ruppert says in his movie (later fleshed out in "Crossing the Rubicon") that when crooks play a rigged game, they can eventually be nailed, because they know the game is rigged and they're not trying very hard. Their arrogance becomes their undoing. My only hope is that we're seeing the beginning of that process.

But Kean should just shut up and slink away. He had no bite when the commission was in session, so what good is his bark now? That man knows no shame and is a disgrace. He has major interests in Saudi oil, for chrissake:

When George Bush told the Washington Post back in January that he had his "accountability moment" and that it was "called the 2004 election" I was so pissed.

He feels he had one moment to be accountable, and that was the election last year. He's not accountable any other time.

I say we take accountability and kick his ass out of office through impeachment in the House, and conviction in the Senate.

I was not surprised when they kept asking softball questions, railroaded the 9-11 families and let Bush testify without oath, off the record, in a closed session, holding Cheney by the hand, and finally allowed their notebooks to be confiscated. Incensed, yes, but not surprised.

Why didn't he ask for those files when the commission was working? I don't think he really wants to get them. And I think he knew all along he wasn't going to see them.

Your report was a sham, a farce, a clumsy cover-up. It makes the Warren Commission look on the "up and up". Anyone who thinks differently, read Dr. Griffin's book and then PM me.

Every member of that Commission has sold his soul for political or monetary gain. They all know that they have been used as tools of the B*sh administration and their imperialistic ambitions.

It now appears (according to this report of a "renewed" investigation) that maybe, just maybe, some of them are having some second thoughts, or perhaps they are just trying to make it appear that they're actually doing something for their country besides selling it down the river.

Here's a little message for y'all: your only hope to prevent the next attack is to publically identify the people who did the last one so that they can be indicted, tried, convicted, and punished. But you already know that, don't you.

very slow reading(picked up other books, pregnancy, you know life and all). The almost immediate proclamations of "Nothing really new in this report" from the day it was published should have set off red flags-I find that there is a lot in this report that illustrates the complete negligence and mismanagement (Anything But Clinton) of the Bush administration.

The number of pages on each administration alone is telling

The Clinton section is 50 or so pages including datelines of what was going on and what was done. Criticism (to my reading) is included along with the testimonies of all the key players.

The Bush section is 30 pages or so and there is almost no first hand testimony about what was done. It reads more like something you or I could write in hindsight from newspaper clippings.


I need to get back to it but so far that has been my impression.

The 9/11 Commission was a farce though as it was supposed to be "nonpolitical" (can't have any of that in the middle of a political season now can we) but I read some editorializing and hint dropping throughout what I have read so far.

A follow-up investigation by the Sept. 11 commission has been stood-up by the Bush administration, commissioners said.

The panel is taking an unofficial look at whether the government is doing enough to prevent future terrorist attacks on U.S. soil.

Former Republican New Jersey Gov. Thomas H. Kean, the chairman of the commission, said two-month-old requests for information are still unanswered, The New York Times reports.

"All we're trying to do is make the public safer," said Kean.

At least it seems he certainly deserves equally if not more credit for the whole 9-11 debacle.

If I am indeed correct. Seems to me, Kean a while back received a small however significant amount of scrutiny as to his own connections to those involved in the attacks.

Seems rather interesting he would come out now asking for more information.

that way we won't find out who done it, and that's how we keep the public safer.

Mr. Kean released copies of letters to The New York Times. The letters are two pages long and ask for information "on steps taken to make the American people safer and more secure."

Letters also were sent to Homeland Security, the Justice Department, the Energy Department and the Treasury Department.
