Iraq Resolution Getting Unanimous Support

UNITED NATIONS - The United States will get unanimous support for its new resolution on Iraq (news - web sites) after Syria decided to join Germany, France and Russia in backing the measure aimed at attracting more troops and money to the war battered-country, a U.N. diplomat said Thursday.

Earlier Thursday, the three European opponents of the U.S.-led war against Iraq said they would vote in favor of the resolution. That had left only Syria's vote in doubt.

A well-informed U.N. diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Syria had notified the United States, which holds the Security Council presidency this month, that it would support the resolution.

Syria's notification of support wouldn't have anything to do with off-setting this would it.

US imposes sanctions on Syria

The United States' House of Representatives has passed legislation to impose sanctions on Syria for alleged ties to terrorist groups and attempts to obtain nuclear, biological and chemical weapons.

The legislation also calls on Syria to end its occupation of Lebanon.

The bill was passed 398 to four.

Last week, President George W Bush ended two years of opposition to the legislation and has indicated he will sign the bill.

The thread was from last night...don't have a link for it. Rummy has a $1.9 billion "slush fund" out of which he can do/spend anything he wants on anything he wants, with no oversight or further approval. I beleive the actual value of the fund is even larger, but this is the amount he has total, unchecked control over.

It's just business, folks. Bush is running USA Inc just as he said he would.

This is basically a diplomatic face-saving move that will allow the U.S. government, the French, and the Germans to kiss and make up.

In absolute terms it is nothing more than a rhetorical affirmation of the fact that we are in Iraq and that it is now a problem that the U.S AND the U.N. need to work together to solve.

Make no mistake; they haven't suddenly become sympathetic to our plight in Iraq, and especially not sympathetic to Dub's falling poll numbers here. No, France, Germany and Russia are looking to protect what investment interests they have in Iraq and, more importantly, the chance to have investment opportunities there in the future. Read: they don't like the looks of Bechtel and Halliburton getting all those no-bid contracts, and want in on at least a piece of the action. This was strictly a business decision by those nations; nothing more.

Now, for Syria, it may be a matter of self-preservation; the Assad son not wanting his nation to be next in line for the "PNAC Domino Theory". He's already got enough trouble fending off Sharon and HIS domination ideas, let alone Dub, Grumpy Rummy et al.

By letting Kofi decide much of what goes into the new Iraqi constitution. US I'm sure wanted no state religion with guarantees of freedom of speech, rights for women, tolerance, acknowledgement of free market capitalism. By the time the UN crafts the "perfect" constitution, Iraq may well wish it's dictatorship back.

Bet they get an islamic republic just short of Sharia, women get the veil and the whip/boot, and the economy will be command and control with individual business folks (iraq has a lot) getting shafted. But the trains will run on time again.
