Bush* Snubs Cretien in Asia

Chilly relationship continues at APEC summit

BANGKOK - He scratched at the door, but White House officials weren't letting Prime Minister Jean Chrétien in today.

The prime minister has requested a formal one-on-one meeting with U.S. President George W. Bush during the two-day APEC summit here this week - but the demand so far has met with nothing more than silence.

Chrétien and Bush were expected to bump into each other several times during the summit of 21 world leaders, but U.S. officials shrugged off a Canadian request for a formal bilateral meeting between the men, who have never had a close personal relationship.

Bush has yet to visit Canada in the almost three years since he was sworn in as president.

nor, frankly, do I think that Mr. Chretien is terribly despondent over the lack of 'closeness'.

We don't want him up here in the Great White North. I moved back home to get away from that corporate puppet.

We know what Bush is and what kind of behavior can be expected from him. No surprises there!

I just have to get this little kick at King George tho, just have to! Chretien stopped over in Afghanistan to visit our Canadian troops and say thanks from all Canadians. Hmmmm, gee, I wonder why Bush didn't do the same for his troops in Iraq?

He needs a barricade from reality when "visiting" the troops. It's all carefully choreographed and staged. No pesky noises or signs from protestors...including pissed off military families! Karl Rove learned his craft well...and Junior follows his directions to a "T". Welcome to Amerika!

But i thought that he did come here once to the G8 in Kananaskis and caused all sorts of trouble. That's when he hijacked the conference with his agenda and "jokingly" called PM Chretien a dinosaur.

are unaware of the shabby treatment of Diefenbaker by JFK when he visited Canada. Kennedy openly looked down his nose at Canadians in general, and Diefenbaker in particular, and was uninterested in hiding his contempt for his hosts.
On the other hand, you have Canadians hijacking an entire ship full of Americans and holding them hostage in Prince Rupert. If I had been President at the time, I wouldn't have hesitated to send in the Marines and the Navy, full force.
The funny thing about this is that Dubya's probably ignorant about the salmon war, the dressed-lumber war, and other issues between the two countries. He's just steamed because Canadians have decided that pot is not a mortal threat to national security, and also opted out of the invasion of Iraq.

Leaders call Quebec Summit a success

QUEBEC (CP) -- Prime Minister Jean Chretien and other world leaders declared the latest Summit of the Americas as the start of a new era and a great success despite violent clashes at the security perimeter enclosing the politicians.

U.S. President George W. Bush, Chretien and 32 other hemispheric leaders agreed to require members to remain democracies to reap the benefits of the world's largest free trade zone that they want in place no later than December 2005.

Chretien and Bush also talked privately about the huge U.S. appetite for Canadian power but struck no deals.

"There are a lot of opportunites for us," said the prime minister. "(But) these projects take years to put into place."

All leaders agreed to push to improve the lives of the poor and ensure the wealth of greater trade is spread more evenly among countries and citizens.

"We want to make sure that each citizen has an equal opportunity to live in dignity," Chretien said.

He and Bush shrugged off suggestions that the widespread protests on the first two days of the meeting suggested citizens don't approve of their work. (snip/...)

I think it was his first official trip out of the country. This might ring a bell: While he was there, as Chretien's guest, he made the alarmingly odd announcement that Mexico's President Vincente Fox was going to be his first official Head of State guest in the White House! It was horrendously bad taste.
