US army to deploy fresh troops in Iraq
US army to deploy fresh troops in Iraq

Wednesday 22 October 2003, 14:56 Makka Time, 11:56 GMT

The Pentagon plans to replace the bulk of the 132,000 troops currently in Iraq with fresh troops and lighter combat units next year.

<snip>

Some officials have indicated that the 101st may be replaced by a smaller unit because the area is relatively quiet.

It is the only major combat unit in Iraq that does not already have a designated replacement.

The army said in July that the 4th Infantry Division, now deployed in the so-called Sunni triangle between Baghdad and Tikrit, will be replaced from March to April by the 1st Infantry Division and the 30th Army National Guard Infantry Brigade from North Carolina.

1. kick
I remember in 2000, my boss' son had just enlisted in the Marines and she told me she was voting for Bush/Cheney because she 'likes Cheney' and 'didn't trust her son's safety to a Democrat'...

I responded that if B/C got in, I guaranteed that her son would be deployed somewhere overseas within 18 months. Gee .....

Let's hope they can all come home safely, and soon.

2. Hopefully they'll have body armor
But I doubt it, they don't seem to treat reservists well.

3. When the big drawdown happens by March...
...I expect things will get really ugly. The resistance only needs to hold out until then.

6. Tacoma's own Stryker Brigade
Will be headed there in March, too. First deployment for the brand-spankin' new armed vehicle fighting force.
