Senator sees Vietnam parallels in Iraq troubles

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A leading Republican senator said there are parallels between US troubles in Iraq (news - web sites) and its doomed campaign in Vietnam.



John McCain, a former presidential candidate, accused the administration of failing to face up to the seriousness of the problems in Iraq and failing to give the public enough information on the situation.



In an interview with Newsweek magazine released Sunday, McCain said "this is the first time I have seen a parallel with Vietnam in terms of the information that the administration is putting out versus the actual situation on the ground.



"I'm not saying the situation in Iraq now is as bad as Vietnam. But we have a problem in the Sunni Triangle and we should face up to it and tell the American people about it," said McCain, who is a Vietnam war veteran. ...

Is McCain turning on the Bushits. The attacks in the so-called green area of Bahgdad remind me of the Tet offensive -- when the Viet Cong illustrated that there was no where safe in Vietnam -- perhaps these attacks are trying to say the same thing -- there are no safe areas in Bahdad for the foreign invaders.

One could liken Bush's current situation to Enron before
it collapsed. Everything is rotten on tne inside but they're
atill able to maintain the facade on the outside.

Consider the following:

Iraq - not getting any better despite the "cheery news offensive". If anything it's getting worse. Make a point of reading the current Newsweek cover story on this.

9/11 - the commission are starting to show some teeth. Any negative info about the security briefings pre 9/11 that come out could be hugely damaging.

The Wilson/Plame affair is still out there.

The CIA are pissed and the could still cause Bush a major headache.

The economy isn't exactly setting the world on fire.

A year ago I didn't think Bush would be in this much trouble now. Who knows where he'll be in a year's time.

If things are worse by January who knows what McCain might do.

Nothing grinds up critics quicker than money.

Rove has more, McCain less.

The winner is clear.

Other republicans will not follow McCain's lead.

you should'a spoken up a lot sooner.

And to think that McCain could never have predicted this
would happen months prior to this imperialistic invasion.

The fact that you were a POW doesn't let you off the hook either.

The optimistic press releases from Saigon were the downfall of the Johnson Administration when the US Embassy fell to a Vietcong attack during Tet. The long and brutal battle to recapture Hue buried all illusions that victory was anywhere near at hand.

The Bush regime's tight control over the news, and their insistence on having happy news being reported, puts them on the same path that the Johnson Administration followed in Vietnam.

McCain is worried about the PR. He should be more worried about getting the troops out of Iraq.

Why not just tell the truth yourself? That little problem area you refer to as the Sunni Triangle contains about 2/3rds of the Iraqi population. The rest is desert you idiot!
