1. Why do people have children and then do this?
It makes me wish I could bitchslap God for allowing just anybody to become a parent. God this is sickening.

7. their religious convictions prohibit birth control?
they are ashamed-they are ignorant or they are simply just human beings--and they are women-they are ostracized if they attempt an abortion procedure in a clean and dignified environment and they are increasingly being villified for attempting to control their own bodies and their own families. This is awful I agree.

6. I remember reading
Edited on Sun Oct-26-03 05:42 PM by Marianne
about three years ago that five hundred abandoned babies were left at the doorsteps of fire departments in Texas and a significant number were found dead in dumptsters--it was advertised that no questions were to be asked at the fire departments. Does anyone else remember this? It was speculated that the shame of abortion due to religious convictions or the religious prohibitions on birth control and abortion caused this to happen by some researchers who were concerned over the dumpster deaths. Women have the babies they do not want or are not capable of caring for, are ashamed, and in their angst and shame, almost in a mentally ill state, abandon the babies they cannot care for, or do not want others in their social community to know they had birthed.

8. You lead into an excellent point
for support of women's right to choose. If abortion is overturned, that does not stop the unwanted pregnancies or abortions. There will just be more deaths from self-enduced abortions, illegal ones and drowned or murdered children.....

9. Colorado passed a law that allows babies to be abandoned
at hospitals, firestations, police departments (?) with no repercussions to the mother. This law is very common-sensical, but I guess we'll need to stack up the bassinettes if the anti-abortionists get their way.

11. that sounds good
but what happened? How many were abandoned and how many of those abandoned were adopted? How many of the churches that send out their warriors to harrass women who seek abortion, have programs that will sign up their parishoners to adopt the babies they have saved from abortion? I would think that a program like that would be just as strong as the ones that villify women for desiring to controltheir own families and their own lives -- even stronger!! I ,so far, have seen nothing like that in any church--I mean shouldn't there be a very strong committment to adopt these babies they have saved? Shouldn't there be joy that these babies will be fed and cared for by loving Christians who, in their zeal to foster life , had saved them from abortion?--well, there is nothing like that in any church that I know of--no minister and no priest has fostered any real program like that, and that to me is funny in a sad way--LOL --no Sunday morning sign ups for adoption of babies that are abandoned because the mothers were so intimidated in one way or the other into birthing the babies. NOpe--it is far easier because of tradition, to villify the women seeking health care and seeking autonomy over their own life and bodies than it is to find parishoners who will adopt the babies--

19. Worse, none of these edjits wants to
empower these women to raise their own children. They want them born, but don't want to help their moms feed and cloth and shelter them. Just the thought of welfare and social services and these same people are screaming "It's MY money, damnit!"

23. glad they did
i was in pueblo when that baby was "found" in a praire by a woman and it turned out to be hers that she was hiding in the trunk of her car for like 2 weeks.
Glad they passed that, as opposed to the other stupid legislation that comes from the capital.

20. Texas has a "Baby Moses" law
that has been in effect for a few years now. If a woman doesn't want a baby, she can just drop it off somewhere like a fire house anonymously. No questions asked, and no penalty. However, I think the child must be less than a year old.

The law is not publicized much. I don't think there's enough awareness of the law.

Nevertheless, just from the sound of this article, I think the babies were likely dead before the law was passed.

21. Same in Arizona, but it is publicized
Babies may be left at fire stations and other similar place, but I believe the mother must actually turn the baby over, not just leave it. there was an article in the local paper this week about one of the first such abandonees and her new adopted family.

But what happens to the children who aren't abandoned, the ones whose mothers think/hope they can raise them but only months or even years later discover that it's beyond their means? And what about the women whose husbands/partners walk out and leave them with no means of support?

The whole damn system needs an overhaul. The "safe baby" laws are just a very tiny step, and I'm not even sure it's in the correct direction.

14. Texas and other conservative states...
It would be interesting to do a study to determine how many abandoned dead infants turn up in conservative states vs "liberal" ones.

18. another possibility
There was a similar story in Aust a few years ago - family renovating came across a bag with the remains of three infant children - all sorts of theories were spouted (including that they were the reamins of the infamous Beaumont kids who dissappeared in the sixties, despite the fact that the Beaumonts were all over school age when the vanished) incest, satanic rituals, lack of legal abortion etc etc

It turned out that the babies were all stillborn decades ago - no one had killed the babies
