Hidden foes confuse, torment U.S. in Iraq
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L28634892.htm

BAGHDAD/BERLIN, Oct 28 (Reuters) - Guerrillas in Iraq seem to have a deadly answer to every claim by U.S. military officials that they are in despair and on the run.

Sunday's bold rocketing of a Baghdad hotel that just missed the U.S. deputy defence secretary and a string of suicide bombings the next day were only the latest in what the generals dismiss as the violent acts of doomed men.

But their varying assessments of their enemy suggest an occupying army reeling from the scale of attacks in Iraq and struggling to narrow a bewildering range of suspects.

Saddam Hussein loyalists, Syria, Iran, al Qaeda and its associate Ansar al-Islam -- all, in recent weeks, have been implicated by U.S. officials in the relentless violence.

1. The Bush Administration refuses to accept the fact that

the resistence is a combination of things, but that it is the Iraqi
people themselves who are defending their country. It is evident
by the term "Improvised Devices" that the bombs themselves are
improvised (read) "home-made". Just because Iraqis on an individual
basis say "We love America", "we are so grateful", when a microphone
is shoved in their faces, that is no idication of how they really
feel. It is not a wise thing to do--making public statements against
an occupying force. If the Iraqis blow up the Rashid Hotel, it is
their Hotel. No amount of spin or PR from the Bush Administration
is going to change the fact that the U.S. is not welcome in Iraq--
and should simply go home.

2. When there are 25 million sets of eyes watching what is going on...
...and we can't put a stop to this kind of stuff from the friendlies turning the bad guys in to us the war is over.

3. In a hostile situation, people are people, and some can

be counted on to ingratiate themselves for favors. Then there is
the Stockholm Syndrome which is a psychological mechanism to
find equilibrium by associating with the enemy as a way to survive.

In understanding Iraq, we have only to consider what we as Americans
would do and how we would act, if our country was invaded, and our
lives became saturated with destruction and despair. It is a very
sad situation.
