U.S. Not Ready for Total Abortion Ban, Bush Says
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush said on Tuesday the United States is not ready for a total abortion ban, but he would sign a ban just approved by Congress on what opponents of the procedure call "partial birth" abortion.

"Yes, I'll sign the ban on partial birth abortion," Bush said at a White House news conference. "And no, I don't think the culture has changed to the extent that the American people or the Congress would totally ban abortions."

The Senate on Oct. 21 approved the ban on the procedure, sending the bill to Bush for his signature. The House of Representatives previously passed the bill.

1. "But hey, when did I ever listen to the little people?"
(when they don't have $100K to spend on my election campaign).

if the idiot intends to change the "culture" into one that will accept subjugating women's rights to the government, and forced pregnancies as in his own extremist, or even Christian beliefs . (some not so extremist religions are attempting to impose their religious beliefs upon all the citizens of the US, namely the Catholic religion as well as the born agains, who do not have a single church that they claim they would belong to.) The wording implies that this culture is not "ready" but that in some point in the future, damn it, that will be changed. They may force the culture to be "ready" eh? I assume Bush thinks and believes that he is the one that will change the "culture"

5. Re: Abortion Ban
I think that the abortion issue is considered settled but the GOP doesn't want to admit it so they don't lose fundies.

When the racists and prudes die out, the GOP will cut abortion outta the platform quick.

Everyone who is anyone in Washington won't do anything to rock the boat on abortion. All the rhetoric is just to keep votes.

The issue of whether abortion should be legal is settled. Abortion will never be illegal in the United States of America ever again. Count on it! ;-)

10. It's strange
Usually when you say abortion...politicians head for the hills..where I am anyway. But for Bush to come out with such statements is unreal....this guy must be stupid or dumb.

12. Just looking ahead
Chimpy's speech writers are just looking ahead to the days when they have forced the rapidly declining quantity of 'unpure Americans' into concentration camps.

11. Never!!! Not under my watch
When America is ready for total abortion ban, I'm ready to leave America. That's not the kind of country or people I want to be associated with or have my hard earned tax dollars going to support.

13. The women I know
want to preserve their right to personal privacy and say these decisions should be up to the parties directly involved, doctor and patient, not some half baked policy makers in DC.

14. It's coming, but I think they'll wait until...
they've established the theocracy. For the time being, despite their control of Congress, the White House, and the Supreme Court, they want to agitate on abortion rather than take more aggressive steps to restrict it. They're not strong enough yet so they need to let the issue fester, because it secures voters who would desert them otherwise. I personally know people who hate everything about the radical Republican agenda except their abortion stance, and that stance keeps them voting Republican because they absolutely cannot bring themselves to vote "for a party that kills babies" (actual quote).

So they'll let it continue for now until they're in complete control of everything; then abortion will be only one of the abominations that are cleansed from the New Jerusalem.
