Mortar Rounds Strike Baghdad Neighborhood
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20031029/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq&cid=540&ncid=1480

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A half dozen mortar rounds exploded in overnight shelling of an upscale neighborhood of Baghdad across the Tigris River from the U.S.-led coalition headquarters but caused no damage or casualties, the U.S. military said Wednesday.

The Tuesday night barrage, which could be heard in the center of the capital, followed a day of violence in which insurgents targeted American forces and Iraqis who work with the occupation authorities. U.S. officials also announced that Baghdad's Deputy Mayor Faris Abdul Razzaq al-Assam was killed Sunday in a drive-by shooting.

The proliferation of attacks on leading Iraqis allied with the occupation bodes ill for attempts by the U.S.-led authorities to persuade more Iraqis to join in administering the country and play a greater role in providing security. Resistance forces have assassinated or attempted to assassinate several prominent figures including Aquila al-Hashimi, a member of the Governing Council, who was fatally shot Sept. 20.

In Tikrit, Saddam Hussein's hometown, insurgents fired late Tuesday on the south gate at the main U.S. military base there. At least one American soldier from the 4th Infantry Division was wounded, witnesses said. A patrol was sent out to search for the assailants, who fled after firing on the troops from a nearby rooftop.

3. Are these the "8" explosions we heard about earlier?

I dont mean this to sound callous and Lord knows I dont want ANYONE, Iraqi, American or other to die. But if this is going to happen, sometimes I wish it would flare up during prime time viewing at like 6pm.. so that it wouldnt get buried and blacked out. It's hard to cut out to a rerun of Princess Diana's butler on Larry King during prime time.. like they did the other day when all hell broke lose and I was here going crazy that they would cut away on all major stations like that to do damage control.

You gotta wonder if these "news" outlets are self censoring like Christine Amapour said or if some media contact from the whitehouse is on the phone saying, "If you air one more fucking minute you are going to have HELL to pay?"

I still want to know what the hell the deal was with the 8 explosions heard earlier.

CNN just said something about an "improvised" bomb in Basra that killed one soldier and some other rpg attack that wounded 4.

I feel like we are in some weird media blackout.

http://www.notinourname.net/troops/interviews-17oct03.htm
These soldiers stories speak volumes more then what we are hearing about in the media.. and they were from before ramadan.. I cringe to think of what these men will be returning from leave to.

snip:
CFTM-- “Did you see a lot of your buddies get killed? How did it affect you?”

USA-- “How the hell do you think it affected me? I saw over 30 of the men I had to keep safe die, and over 100 get wounded and not come back. I still don’t know if some of the wounded men made it or not. I was never told before I came back home.”

CFTM-- “So it really was awful and as bad as some returning troops have claimed?”

USA-- “It was like a long trip to hell that you knew you might return from. Of course it is as bad as the soldiers say it is. Hell it’s even worse if the truth has to come out. It’s a constant fu..ing nightmare trying to figure out where the guerillas are going to hit, how to keep the civilians calm, and also getting enough water and food to eat. That is one thing the media never really told the Americans about, how bad it was when our convoys weren’t getting through. We had to go to some Iraqi people and trade socks and underwear for some food and a little water.”

CFTM-- “You really did get that desperate because I saw it in the foreign media that the Iraqi civilians had stepped in and fed a whole bunch of troops that had been days without food.”

USA-- -“Yeah, that ain’t no joke about getting help from the civilians right after the invasion. We had a pretty good laugh about that and how the army owed them some money for reimbursement. We would not have starved probably, but when we got the food from the people it made sure we could still operate as a functioning unit. It was a near thing that several guys almost died of dehydration because we ran out of clean water for a few days.”

CFTM-- “Just keep going, I want to hear more about the hardships the military and Bush made you go through. I want the American people to know what a nightmare this war has become and what it’s doing to our service men over there.”

USA-- “Okay, well I can bitch about the problems like food being short and water going bad, but I want to tell people about how bad the attacks on US and coalition forces have gotten in the last month. In the last two weeks I was there we were attacked at least 20 times a day if you count all the shots we heard from random sniper or opportunity attacks. We were losing at least five men a day to injuries and there was at least one of our unit killed every twenty four hours.”

CFTM-- -“So you were getting one a day killed and at least five injured? Did you know many of the guys killed?”

USA-- -“That’s a real dumb fu..ing question to ask me. You know what my rank is, of course I knew them, I was the head NCO for years in our unit. I knew most of the guys who died and I held a lot of hands as they were dying. You tell me that’s not gonna to give you nightmares!”

“I had one guy tell me all he wanted was to see his little daughter; she was born three days after the war started. He died in the sand holding my hand and crying because his daughter would never know him. Tell me that’s fu..ing right. Where was George Bush when this kid was gasping for air and spitting his blood on foreign soil?”

5. "Succexplosions!"
White House Memorandum to the U.S. Media:

the word: "explosion" shall no longer be referred to in further news reports. They shall hereupon be known as "Freedom Blasts".

6. Another near miss
These guys really are amatures. It doesn't take a whole lot of skill to aim a mortar properly. They seem to be learning, though. Just think what things will be like when the Iraqi resistance has had enough field practice that their rounds actually hit their targets.

7. But are they really missing?
I try not to put my tinfoil hat on to tight.. but I mean, I just dont understand.. why are they missing so much?? Is it really that technical? Im thankful that they are.. I dont want any deaths.. but, from a lady who has only gone shooting a handful of times and can hit a mean amount of skeet.. I just dont understand.

11. Aiming problems
They're using time-delayed mortars and don't have the opportunity to make ranging shots to compensate for windage. Shooting indirect fire weapons, like mortars, isn't easy but it's not rocket science either. With practice the Iraqi resistance will very likely improve.

10. Important to note that the attacks came at night
There is a psychological effect to a nighttime attack. It wakes people up. It makes it impossible to get back to sleep. It makes them feel vulnerable. So whether or not the shells hit anything is moot. That probably would have been gravy. Like those car bombings two days ago - it puts people on notice that they really are not in control of their situation.
