General Wesley Clark responds to President Bush's Comments on a Woman's
Right to Choose

"Our Congress and our citizens would not -- and should not -- tolerate a
return to the dark days before Roe v. Wade. I stand with the United States
Constitution, the United States Supreme Court, and the majority of the
American people in believing that our government has no right to come
between a woman, her family, and her doctor in making such a personal and
private decision."

4. He said that the Americans are not

ready for Congress to outlaw abortion or something like that. I remember thinking that he did not say that Americans are not ready for the court to overturn Roe v. Wade.

8. It was a softball question, aimed at framing the answer the way Bush...

...wants it framed:

"Do you think Congress or the American people are READY for a complete ban on abortion?"

Easy answer. No. Of course not. This allows him to still appear moderate.

The real question should have been: "Do YOU favor a full ban on abortion?" or at least "Do YOU favor further restrictions on abortion?"

That the press allows him to so easily skirt this is reprehensible.

9. The 12-year old who beat up Dan Quayle...

I remember when a 12 year old girl asked Dan Quayle if, in the event she was raped by her father, he thought she should be required to carry to term the pregnancy. Quayle, I believe, had no "rape and incest" exception for his anti-choice views. With the cameras rolling, all he could do is stammer that he hoped that wouldn't happen to her. I was so proud of that girl, being a fellow pre-high school activist at the time.

Those are the questions that should be asked!

11. compare to last campagin in 2000

Bush reversed all his campaign positions. Now he does not bother with all the bald faced lies(save those for past and present crimes) when projecting into the future. He lays a coded springboard to the dirty work as a signal to the hardcase constituency- if they get it. He expects the press to behave and the people to stay asleep.

Gilded arrogance.

12. Damn, I must say I appreciate Clark coming out

and stating with total clarity his position on staunchly democratic principles.

He says them so clearly that I actually believe he will stand by them fiercely were he to become president.

that's reassuring. I am voting Kucinich, but Clark is alleviating some of my fears. Not all by a longshot. But some.
