LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Most blacklists are designed to intimidate. But thousands of Americans are clamoring to join one drawn up by the National Rifle Association (NRA).

Actor Dustin Hoffman was so dismayed to find his name missing from the NRA's shadowy 19-page list of U.S. companies, celebrities, and news organizations seen as lending support to anti-gun policies that he wrote to the powerful pro-gun lobby group begging to be included. "As a supporter of comprehensive gun safety measures, I was deeply disappointed when I discovered my name was not on the list," Hoffman wrote in a letter to the NRA that was released Tuesday.

The second amendment relates to state militias. It protects states rights from the federal government. It doesn't give individuals the right to have guns. :mad:

(BTW, I'm not against gun ownership. But I think we need to explore gun safety issues in ways that the NRA won't even consider.)

Seems like this, being "enumerated" binds the feds. Anything else is left to the states. Read it as often as you like, as well as the preamble to this section:

The Conventions of a number of the States having, at the time of adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added, and as extending the ground of public confidence in the Government will best insure the beneficent ends of its institution;

So these Amendments restrict the feds.

is written to restrict the federal government. It is written to LIMIT the powers of the federal government to those enumerated in the Constitution.

Of course, it has gone way beyond the enumerated powers and needs to be reigned in.

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

First, the 2nd guarantees INDIVIDUALS the right to "bear" (not OWN) arms in militias. This comes out of English law which only allowed certain classes to "bear" arms or even form militias. You can make a good argument that the right to "bear" arms in a militia should extend to the right to "own" arms, but they are separate things.

As for the 2nd being the only collective right in the BoR, wrong. Freedom of the press and freedom of religion are the same types of rights, namely, they protect the rights of individuals to exercise those rights in collectives. For that matter, so does the right to assemble, since you can't protect the rights of those assembling if you dictate what the assembly may do.

Hope that clears things up. It's quite within the legitimate realm of debate to argue that since the right to "keep and bear" arms in a militia shall not be abridged that any law which prohibits ownership of desired arms for any purpose abridges the right of a citizen to be prepared to bear any arms in a militia he or she sees fit. But the amendment does not explicitly state that. It's an interpretation, though of course Bush and the NRA want to convince you it's fact.

There are two recognized forms of the militia, organized and unorganized. The organized form is the National Guard/Coast Guard, while the US Supreme Court has recognized the unorganized militia to consist of all male US citizens age 17-45. That clears things up as to the meaning of militia?

As per the 1st Amendment? How can one right in the Constitution be listed as a individual right, and the very next one after it listed as a state right?

Something happened with pro vs anti gun owners. I don't know if it was the NRA or the PTA but I saw an uprising. I feel any mention of restricting gun ownership of law abiding Americans is going to bite us in the ass. That's my take on it and nothing more.

what I saw in 2000 was the election being stolen by BushCo... so it was actually a backlash of voters who elected Gore: wow! Who knew?

The NRA is a powerful lobby for a reason. It's got a lot of members who're willing to put their money where their mouths are.

pay considerably higher dues than that and thier numbers constitute a hell of allot more power at the voting booth than those of the National Redneck Association. Get over it.

Though they are one of the largest lobbying groups in the nation. The power of the NRA rests on the fact that something like 75-80% of all Americans agree with their basic tenets: that law-abiding citizens have a constitutional right to own firearms and that they should have greater access to them for self-defense. Just look at the past decade's worth of conceal-carry reform laws passed across the country. Can you say that the NRA alone, with only 3.6 million members, was able to get 40 states to enact CCW laws? Many people don't dwell on the small issues the NRA supports or opposes, just the basic message sent. The NRA, whether you love em or hate em, are damn good at getting their message out to large numbers of people and swaying votes among many people who are not NRA members. You tell the 75% of Americans that a particular politician is out to take away a constitutional right and the people will get upset, whether they own a gun or not.

NRA members. That which the NRA claims to fear and hate, it engages in, itself. This is a common scenario for those who erroneously assume that the rest of society operates from their own twisted frame of reference. Fortunately the rest of society does not.

A group which collects a list of the names of people it fears and encourages its members to engage in reactionary behavior against those people, is elitist, paranoid and dangerously psychotic. Particularly when this groups prime objective is the unrestricted ownership of deadly weapons.

Like I said in an earlier post....the NRA does responsible gun owners no service with it's idiotic paranoid ranting. Such behavior gives credence to the belief that gun owners are psychos. Arguments to support it do the same. So I'd ask that you refrain from your screed on this board....many of us here are responsible gun owners....WE DON'T WAN'T OR NEED WHAT YOU MISTAKENLY CONSTRUE TO BE A CLEVER SORT OF HELP! Unfortunately the website is pretty typical of the Brady Campaign/MMM. The two "outrages" listed are both, at the mininum, very misleading statements. I don't really see the big deal about a "blacklist", either; does anybody here support corporations or individuals that give support to causes you're against? I try not to.

The website is also a pretty typical attempt by MMM and the BC to make it appear as tho some new grassroots pro-control group has come to be. The website is "Sponsored by StoptheNRA.com", which in term is nothing more than a BC/MMM shill. Pretty sorry.
