Perry motel accused of barring "coloreds" from pool

By DAVID ROYSE
Associated Press Writer

PERRY, Fla. --
A motel in this small north Florida town is being investigated because a black man said he was told that "coloreds" weren't allowed in the pool, state officials said Thursday.

Perry is the same town that faced protests in 2001 because another black man said he was told at a bar that he could only be served in back.

Attorney General Charlie Crist issued a subpoena Thursday to the owners of the Southern Inn, where Dwayne Parker said he was denied access to the pool in July. Parker was in town for a family reunion, and according to Crist's office, was told by an owner that "coloreds aren't allowed in the pool."

3. Maybe they should change the name of that town to "Pleasantville"
:eyes:
(it's a movie reference...not a racial comment)

22. "Pleasantville" would be so much easier for George &Co to control.
Too bad he's stuck with so much messy technicolor.

5. Perry, ha
this little town is total redneck...pick-ups with guns in the windows and the truck falling apart.
.We own property around there and the police really don't do their jobs..our camping cabin was broke into and they wouldn't or couldn't take prints or castings of the tires tracks because they didn't have the equiptment with them...I hate that damn place...people robbed us and got away wit it.

6. Perry, FL hits the news rather frequently
with their antics and they usually get away with it and they keep on doing it.

13. I know some really old white people who still use "colored"
My mother was one of them. I would tell her that word was innappropriate, and she would try, but sometimes it would still slip out. She never used the "N" word though, and if she heard anyone else use it they would get the sharp edge of her tongue!

21. Unfortunately, it's not uncommon in FL
I just moved here about 1 1/2 years ago. A lady I work with, in her mid 40s, still says "colored". I about died of shock the first time i heard her use that word. I tried to reason with her that it's not an appropriate term, but she just said, "I've always said that, and I don't see anything wrong with it."

I swear, Florida is the most backward, racist, bigotted place I've ever lived -- and I moved here from TEXAS!

..but then he's almost 70. I try to correct him to no avail. He means no harm by it - old habits die hard. Not a prejudiced bone in his body, though. :)

10. Story
2 years ago my parents and I were attending a car club convention in Houston. Some friends of my parents (now ex-friends) from Georgia were there too, a husband and wife with a lot of money. At the same time there was a convention at the hotel of black churches. My mother had mentioned to the wife of this couple that the hotel had a very nice swimming pool and maybe it would be a good idea to go swimming later. The lady remarked, as she was looking at the pool through a window, "too mnay black children in there if you ask me". She also made a remark about the MARTA transit system in Atlanta calling it the "Moving Africans Rapidly Through Atlanta". We have not spoken to them since.

17. Thanks for clearing that up! Now I see he is saluting!
When I started posting here, someone kept including a photo of a young man in a boat in a stream, and I thought the poster must be the most vain person in the world to insist on showing himself outdoors, wearing summer clothes, having a great time, and looking very nice. I think I almost was starting to hate him when it finally hit me I was looking at a photo of Al Gore as a young man!

VERY embarrasing!

Though personally I hope that Emperor George P. Caligula makes a stop in 1789 and 1776, eh?

15. I lived in New Orleans a dozen years ago
and they still get away with a lot down there, but people seem to be more complacent about it. There are still restaurants where blacks can't be served except via a take-out window around back. I've heard seemingly nice white ladies (my landlady and her friends) commiserate how public services (swimming pool, etc.) are "all for the n-----s" (a frequently heard expression).

The Uptown apartment I rented, the top floor of a 2-family, had an outbuilding with washer/dryer connections, and a separate room with a toilet. I asked what that was for. My landlady responded, matter-of-factly, that it was for the black guys who did yard work, so they didn't have to come in the house.

18. Is anybody really surprised?
I mean I'd like to live in a country where people should be surprised by this. But we hear these kinds of stories every single day. Anybody who thinks racism is a thing of the past needs to come out of the linen closet.

25. Southern Inn Trying to Recreate Genuine Southern Experience
It looks like the management of the Southern Inn are trying to recreate a genuine old-fashioned Southern experience--the only difference being that they actually allow Afro-Americans to actually check into their facilities and use their rooms.

I hope the state civil rights agency DOES go after the hotel owners for this stuff. It should have ended decades ago.

27. I pass through Perry regularly.
It is a back-assward little town. I think a lot of racism is people not wanting accept responsibility for their own actions. In other words they would rather blame another groups for the fact that they are too lazy to get out and get an education and do something with their lives when they have plenty of opportunities. You get that in these depressed Southern towns. It's not my faults it's the ...(insert racial or ethnic slur)...
