Insurgent offensive on Iraqi city
Edited on Thu Dec-01-05 06:50 AM by jefferson_dem
Insurgent offensive on Iraqi city

Insurgents have attacked US bases and government offices in Ramadi, in western Iraq, and then dispersed throughout the city, residents say.

Scores of heavily-armed insurgents fired mortars and rockets at the buildings and then occupied several main streets.

The attack came as local leaders and US military officials were meeting at the al-Anbar provincial governor's office.

Ramadi has been a rebel stronghold for many months.

Residents told the Reuters news agency that hundreds of heavily armed men in masks were patrolling the main streets of the city and had set up checkpoints.

4. Naahhh.... No big deal...
Just another one of them last throes.

Bush, cheney, and Rummy has it all figured out. The strategy is the rebels will run out of last throes before the US runs out of cannon fodder.

16. No need for a mask, if you don't work with the people you are
shooting at. Methinks they could be police, so say Iraqi regulars, or just plain civilians who don't want to end up as they say in a gulag if and when they are recognized at work the next day... if there is any work. These guys, (this admin) has engineered what you are seeing to a "T".

18. There's a picture of him holding an assault rifle and (one would assume)
...shooting at US troops. If he weren't wearing a mask, we could see his face. Then we'd know who he is.

Here is a picture of militants in Palestine wearing masks:

Are they also tools of the administration?

19. I mean.... and I may post this in another thread, that I have heard
from a reputable source... that on one particular morning in Iraq, some Iraqi "trainees" were supposed to be in the lineup for the morning excercises. None of them showed up. A hail of mortar shells came in on our boys and their camp. Ten minutes later all the Iraqi "trainees" were standing in line. Do the math.

12. ????
Huh?

He's wearing a mask because he doesn't want to be thrown in some US gulag prison?

3. Perhaps the US and "Iraqi Forces" are busy elsewhere?
<snip>

Residents said there was no noticeable presence of US or Iraqi forces in the city after the attacks.

6. Yep
and when they launch a "macho named" offensive here for another make believe victory, the insurgents will swap places with them for the city with the previous "macho named" offensive.

And so it goes... on and on until time to cut an run err... declare victory and redeploy.

Iraq: Operation Iron Hammer Launched
November 30, 2005 17 11 GMT

U.S. and Iraqi troops launched Operation Iron Hammer on Nov. 30, the U.S. military announced. The operation is aimed at clearing the Hai Al Becker region, about 106 miles west of Baghdad, of insurgents and securing the area for Iraq's Dec. 15 national elections. Approximately 2,000 U.S. troops are being assisted by about 500 Iraqi army soldiers in the operation.

13. Operation Iron Hammer WWII
Operation Iron Hammer (WWII)

Operation Iron Hammer was a plan by the German military to neutralize the Soviet Union's armament manufacturing industry during World War II. Conceived late in 1943, the plan could not be implemented as from early 1944 onwards, the Red Army over-ran more and more of the Luftwaffe's airfields, eventually putting the targets (around Moscow and Gorky) out of range of even the Luftwaffe's most far-reaching weapons.

(Maybe not such a good name, given how it turned out for the Germans)

8. Iraqi rebels attack in Ramadi, seize some streets
RAMADI, Iraq (Reuters) - Masked militants attacked a U.S. base and a local government building with mortars and rockets in the western Iraqi city of Ramadi on Thursday, before holding ground on central streets, residents said.

Scores of heavily armed men set up roadblocks at major entrance and exit points to the city, a heartland of the insurgency in Iraq, and patrolled the main thoroughfares, residents said.

In some areas they dispersed after a few hours, but guerrillas remained in other parts.

Leaflets were distributed and posted on walls, saying al Qaeda in Iraq, the group led by Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, was taking over the city.
