Former senator says war made bin Laden into hero from 'ne'er-do-well'

Former U.S. Sen. Fritz Hollings criticized the war in Iraq on Thursday, arguing America has failed to secure the country, killed people the U.S. has tried to win over and created more terrorists.

Hollings, who spoke at the 2005 ThinkTEC Homeland Security Innovation Conference, also said the war in Iraq transformed terrorist Osama bin Laden from a "ne'er-do-well" with little support to a hero in many parts of the Middle East. The 38-year Senate veteran said America needs to either commit more troops to suppress the insurgents and stabilize the country or consider leaving.

"You either have to get in or get out," said Hollings, who retired last year. "We are asking the Iraqis to do what we haven't done: secure the country."

Hollings' comments come as President Bush has battled declining approval ratings and a growing chorus of Democrats who are fed up with the war and calling for an exit strategy. White House officials Thursday disagreed with Hollings' statements. Spokesman Blair Jones said America has made strides rebuilding infrastructure, introducing democracy and fighting insurgents in the country.
