Wal-Mart hired security guards to spy on Quebec employees
Employees at a Quebec Wal-Mart store that closed after a successful union drive were spied upon by undercover security guards, according to an investigation by Radio-Canada.

Guards told journalists at CBC's French-language service that Wal-Mart had hired them to spy on employees at the store in Jonquière, 200 kilometres north of Quebec City, early in 2005. It corresponded to the time the world's largest retailer announced the store would close for financial reasons.

A documentary on the subject will be broadcast Friday on the program Zone Libre. In it, the guards say their surveillance targeted union leaders and workers sympathetic to the drive.

One former guard said he patrolled the store in civilian clothes, watching employees. Another agent said the store's surveillance cameras were used to follow certain workers.

1. Someone tell me this isn't perfectly legal. Then I'll care.
No, seriously.

2. It is clear in the article that spying on union leaders, etc, IS illegal
in Quebec:

"Spying on union leaders or sympathizers is illegal under the Quebec Labour Code."

So I guess you care now? lol

3. See, I thought spying on employees in and of itself was 100% legal

apparently spying on union leaders or sympathizers is an exception to that. Well ok.

Not that what Wal-mart did here surprises me in the least.

Edit: That's a long winded way of saying yes, I care now. Just because you disagree with a law is in no way a justification for wanton disregard of it just because you're Wal-mart, whatever the merit or demerit of the unionization plan.

6. While doing electrical work for a major retail store years ago in a
big ass shopping mall. I discover peep holes in the women's dressing rooms and one way mirrors. I reported this to the store manager, which he didn't believe and was too fat to crawl out to the cat-walk and duct work to the viewing holes. He just blew it off, and said he'd have Security look into this incident, it was probably maintenance workers he said,

A few years later the security man that worked for that store was found guilty of rape and murder. And it was him that was spying on women.

It was also revealed that the victim was a big customer of that store.

7. It's illegal in the US, so I'm sure it is in Canada
Because they have better labor laws than we do.... 100% against Federal law here.
