Company Blocks Ads Critical of Ohio Rep.
Company Blocks Ads Critical of Ohio Rep.
By DAVID HAMMER, Associated Press Writer

Friday, December 2, 2005
(12-02) 14:31 PST WASHINGTON, (AP) --

An advertising company that gives most of its political donations to Republicans blocked the Democratic National Committee from putting up billboards criticizing GOP Rep. Jean Schmidt of Ohio.

Lamar Advertising Co. of Baton Rouge, La., refused to put up two billboards in Portsmouth, Ohio, and another in Cincinnati with a picture of Schmidt and the following message: "Shame on you, Jean Schmidt: Stop attacking veterans. Keep your eye on the ball — we need a real plan for Iraq."

The billboards are the result of 7,000 donations, DNC executive director Tom McMahon said, after Schmidt attacked Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha, a Democrat and Marine veteran, for his call for withdrawal from Iraq. Schmidt was booed off the House floor two weeks ago when she said "cowards cut and run, Marines never do."
(snip)

Lamar's Huntington, W.Va., regional manager, Mark Watts, rejected the billboards criticizing Scmidt as a personal attack, said Hal Kinshaw, Lamar's vice president of governmental affairs.

10. Deregulation sucks, huh?
Too bad the dems go along with these schemes right along with the repukes. All those things happened under Clinton, sadly. Financial deregulation that allowed Enron, Worldcom, etc to happen took place under his admin. Both parties play this game.

11. So who wants to start a billboard business in Ohio
beginning with Portsmouth and Cincinnati?

With a little price cutting, might give Lamar a run for their money. Besides, a little competition might do some good.

12. Would you please back up your assertions with specifics
As I recall, the Republicans have been in control of the House since 1994. And as I recall, Reagan pushed for deregulation.

It's true the Dems have played defense on this issue since Reagan but the Dem party has never pushed for it the way the Repubs have.

17. Was billboard company ownership every "regulated"?
(In the sense that they were told with whom they had to do business.)

What does privatizing energy companies have to do with the private ownership (and therefore control) of all the places where the public exchanges ideas?

And even if Democrats help create this situation, how does that justify the ongoing situation where only the party that helps the rich get richer is allowed access to the public discourse? No matter how we go to that situation, we're always entitled to criticize it.

18. The media devolution was started back under rr...
Most of what played out under Clinton was in place before he became president...

Allowing media companies to dominate a market, Billboard signs included, occurred back in 1990...

When I suggest deliberately defaciung billboards owned by Lamar Advertising I am merely engaging in a satircal riff.

14. Billboard company rejects anti-Schmidt ads
Billboard company rejects anti-Schmidt ads

By Malia Rulon
Enquirer Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON - An advertising company told the Democratic Party on Friday that it won't put up billboards attacking Republican Rep. Jean Schmidt that 7,000 people across the country paid to run unless changes are made.

The Democratic National Committee had started a fund-raising campaign this week - pulling in $250,000 - to put up billboards in Schmidt's Southwest Ohio district saying "Shame on You, Jean Schmidt: Stop Attacking Veterans. Keep Your Eye on the Ball - We Need a Real Plan for Iraq."

The ads tell people to call Schmidt's Portsmouth office and include a disclaimer stating that they were paid for by the national committee.

But Lamar Advertising Co., which owns the billboards in Portsmouth where the ads were to be placed, told the committee that the company objected to the content of the message.
