Lott chastises Bush

State not part of U.S. recovery

By GEOFF PENDER
SUN HERALD

President Bush said Friday that the future of the U.S. economy is "as bright as it's been in a long time," but U.S. Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., promptly issued a statement that Bush might be forgetting something.

Mississippi.

Lott urged Bush "not to leave Mississippi behind in the nation's recovery," and recalled Bush's promise to South Mississippians on his first visit after Katrina on Sept. 2.

"The president said, 'The good news is - and it's hard for some to see it now - that out of this chaos is going to come a fantastic Gulf Coast, like it was before. My attitude is, if it's not going exactly right, we're going to make it go exactly right. If there's problems, we're going to address the problems,'" Lott quoted Bush.

Lott said, "Mr. President, the recovery is not going exactly right. Three months after Katrina, 42 percent of the travel trailers required for those still homeless have not been delivered by FEMA. Winter is coming to Mississippi, and too many people are still living in tents or carports. Three months after the hurricane, only an estimated one-quarter of the storm's debris has been removed in most areas, and too many neighborhoods have had none removed."

Lott states that of the "only 314 federal business loans had been approved for Mississippi, out of 7,050 applications."

7. I despise Lott as much as the next sane member of society.
But, he is not fishing for a defense contract, he is trying to get the Katrina survivors what was promised. For once, he is actually representing the needs of his constituents. This is not the first time he has challenged the admin and condemned their stance on things.

He knows the MS Gulf Coast is in dire need of support. If you don't know anything about how bad it really is in South Mississippi, I suggest you start at this link http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/story?id=1360126. If that doesn't satisfy you, then you might want to come volunteer to come help.

This thread has tons of links that you might find interesting.

35. Hello MissWaverly! (((hugs)))
It is so good to see you.

I'm doing better than many folks here, I have a femansion (trailer) and I am too pig headed to put up with their incompetence. I have every intention of surviving and rebuilding. There are others not as stubborn or as fortunate as I am.

As troublinwinter suggests in her post below, write your congress critters and demand that they support and fund the reconstruction efforts. Use Trent Lott's words in your letter and if you want inspiration, watch Congressman's Taylor speech on the house floor. He makes so much sense and his words are heartfelt. http://www.leftandrightfight.com/genetaylor.wmv

This thread discusses the third world conditions that still exist, 3 months after the storm.

63. NO HE is NOT!! There is WAAAAAY more going on here, if you just
go back in time a bit!!!

Bush SHITCANNED Lott. Remember, Lott was the highly successful, tough-but-respected, GIT ER DONE Majority Leader before Cat Killer Frist. Why did Bush hate Lott? Because Lott had POWER--he could demand concessions in bills proposed by the White House, he could dole out pork, not just for himself (and he took his share) but to the other senators on both sides of the aisle who worked with him and were not simple obstructionists, for whatever reason.

Trent made that stupid little speech at the Strom birthday shindig. There was a hue and cry, much of it manufactured...by the WHITE HOUSE. Trent apologized, he went on BET and got grilled, and the consensus was, hell, he's one of "those" but the devil ya know...and besides, he does not discriminate in hiring, and he brings job to the state for people of ALL RACES. Eventually, he received forgiveness, and he hasn't forgotten -- if there is any discrimination going on amongst Trent's constituents, odds are good it is in favor of Black constituents seeking relief.

But Bush wanted Trent GONE. He wanted the legislative powers, and all the pork doling, to be centered in the White House with his personal staff. So he installed a Cat Killing robot who would take orders in Trent's old job...Trent kept the car and driver, the staff, and the big office, but he was no longer the LEADER.

Trent is waiting. He wants the LEADER title back--be it majority leader, or minority leader. And my guess is, if he stays on, he WILL get it back. The GOP side of the Senate is in disarray...and Trent is just sitting back, cracking his knuckles, picking his teeth, and grinning...and waiting.

Just call him Brutus, waiting in a dark corner with a shiv, to the Monkey's Caesar!

Bush's pattern of announcing big grandiose plans and then failing to carry them out. Bush promised that the country would do whatever it took to rebuild the Gulf Coast and New Orleans.

And now Lott can see that it was all bullshit. I applaud him for speaking out about it.

27. Grandiose is a precise description of the Bush presidency
I really believe Bush is in the midst of some grand delusion about his power in the world. He acts like a maniac-depressive friend of mine. When she gets maniac, god starts talking to her and she spends money like it's going out of style. Her family had to file bankruptcy after one of her spending sprees.

Problem with the Bush administration is they never seem to come down from their maniac high to contemplate the results of their maniac actions unlike my poor friend.

I think the Bush administration has some sort of chemical in-balance.

Since when does a Big Important Republican Senator have time for little things like constituents' concerns?

Someone needs to tell Trent he should be worrying about Big Important Washington issues--like, say, "the war on Christmas"--and stop criticizing The Prethident over these silly regional problems.

After all, if senators criticize The Prethident, the terr'rists win.

We just need to keep the efforts to recovery and rebuild on the front page. We need to let the powers that be know that this is important and they can't sweep it and FEMA's screw ups under the rug.

And how about the rest who are not so well-known but are working every day within the belly of the Bible Belt to make things better? Do they deserve scorn or support?

47. Remember, Rosa Parks moved to Detroit about 1958
She couldn't get hired in Montgomery, and she was fed up with the segregation/racism and she moved to Detroit, where she lived out the rest of her life. We're all very proud that she chose Detroit as her adoptive home. Soon after moving to Detroit, she was hired by John Conyers to work in his office.

69. Yes, but she did a lot of important work in Ala. before moving there
Rosa Parks, as I'm sure you know, was an activist for years before the Montgomery bus boycott. She and her husband, both originally from Tuskegee, joined the fight to defend the Scottsboro Boys in the 1930s, and in the early 1940s she succeeded in registering to vote in Alabama on her third try.

In Montgomery, she was a member of the NAACP (at a time when just belonging that organization was enough to get you fired, incarcerated, or worse in Alabama), and served as Advisor to the local chapter's Youth Council.

I'm a huge fan of John Conyers, and I think it's fantastic that Ms. Parks worked with him. I'm also a huge fan of the important work that she did in Alabama before moving to Detroit.

Back to my original point--should people in the South (and other "Red states") have to leave to do anything worthwhile? If they choose to stand and fight, should the rest of us just forget about them and let them rot in those "Red states"?

a broken clock is right twice a day.

Lott is RIGHT on this one. It is an opportunity for ALL OF US to write our congress members, Dem. or Rep. and DEMAND rebuilding assistance and support to the Katrina survivors.

If you have a (R) senator or house rep., you now have a good tool to use, with Lott's quotes.

PLEASE write and call congress to put this issue on THE FRONT BURNER!

Quit bitchin' about him and USE his statements to help get the support due those who deserve and need assistance.

No, Lott does NOT want all blacks out of Mississippi. He truly wants his constituents to be cared for, as they were promised, as their paying taxes assured them.

You have much to learn about my home state.

And, on edit: Why in hell do you think that the only people affected were black? From your post, it sounds as if you think that Lott wants blacks who evacuated kept out of the state. But whites also evacuated and lost everything. Katrina was an equal opportunity destroyer--she cared nothing about race as she devastated my state.

I'm sorry that i reduced myself to the level of freepishness in regard Lott's comments and reading between the lines, as i'm prone to do. That said- even though Lott may be totally sincere in his love for the whole of his constituency regardless of race, there is little he can do to redeem himself, at least in my eyes. But then again, i am not one of his constitutes. Lott never had a direct effect on my life with the exception of Federal legislation he's voted for or against and heading up the Clinton Impeachment. Maybe I'm wrong here- is Trent Lott a good man despite his actions and a few unseemly off-the-cuff remarks?

Katrina bitch slapped us all - race, creed and greed did not come in to play - she was an equal opportunity destroyer.

Instead of just damning Lott, take this opportunity to use his position and his words to help the citizens on the Gulf Coast. Take the time to write letters to YOUR congress critters demanding that they fund and support the recovery and reconstruction efforts.

Don't be like Lott and the rest of the politicians that have screwed up our nation, put your words in action.

On a side note, Lott did call for Rumsfield's resignation, this is not his first time to challenge the weed's policies and/or administration. That challenge and this challenge do not absolve him and/or make him a better person, they do, however, give us fuel and positioning to use in our continued fight against the weed and his evil minions.

44. I'm trying to read what you read. I don't even know where
you could possibly get that interpetation. Please provide me the quote so that I can read his words again. Lott actually cares about his constituents, the promised federal money hasn't come and many folks, of all races, are living in substandard conditions.

I challenge you to come to the Gulf Coast, get off your opinionated ass and come see the destruction first hand. Come down here and help the folks you are so worried about volunteer your time to help the cleanup or the rebuilding.

Send letters to your congress critters and ask that they support the reconstruction efforts, use your energies to help and not just to criticize.

46. Ask for your tax cuts back from your rich friends Trent.
If you hadn't helped Shrubbie give away the national surplus, and if you hadn't helped fund bridges to nowhere and an unnecessary war, there might be enough money left to help with domestic problems. You fucked the people of Mississippi, Trent. Face it.

for help for the Gulf Coast, many of us here have donated to help
down there. I think that those of us on a crusade against the red
states are in the minority here. We are all fellow Americans, we
believe in the square deal and the fair wage. We feel really bad
that the government has become engulfed in red tape. We seem to be
paying out the nose for contractors to provide goods and services who
then grab the money and do not provide what's promised. Also I think
we need to back funding for a massive community based rebuilding not
fatcats who are looking for a quick buck.

56. Lott has been pissed at Bush ever since
Bush back Frist's coup and ousted him as Senate Majority Leader. I have never been a Lott fan (and I grew up in that part of Mississippi when Lott was working for a Democratic Congressman who was a George Wallace type). Nevertheless, I believe that Lott is genuinely concerned about the people of Mississippi who were affected by Katrina--all of them. I heard him say in one interview that he is loyal to his party, but he is more loyal to his constituents, and in this matter at least, I believe him. All of this said, I also agree with those who have said that Lott's motives are irrelevant. The important thing is to get help to those people who need it, and anyone who can make that happen is doing a good thing.
P.S.: Isn't Gene Taylor, the Congressman who represents that district, a Democrat?

Gene Taylor is a Dem (although a rather conservative one).

58. I doubt he's as concerned about Blacks and Asians who live on the coast
I have a suspicion he cares more about White people than the Asians and Blacks who live in the coastal counties. I won't forget his comments about Strom Thurmond's pro-segregation presidential bid.

59. It is very difficult for non-Southerners to understand this, but
even genuine bigots can feel genuine compassion for people who are suffering, especially when they are suffering from the same cause. I think that Trent Lott would not hesitate to gerrymander a congressional district in favor of white Republicans over black Democrats or to vote against social programs that would benefit blacks more than whites, but I also believe that he would fight just as hard for a black family or an Asian family affected by Hurricane Katrina as a white family in the same boat, and I am confident that most blacks in South Mississippi would say the same thing.

61. True, but this doesn't excuse his past actions
I live on what used to be the Mississippi coast. I detest his policies. I have to admit he brings up a good point here, but when it's not a natural disaster that's left America on her knees that horrible week after Katrina, I feel he'll be back to his old, ingrained ways again.

62. Hi Merh!
Good for Lott...and good for him understanding that criticism from a high profile repub carries more weight than ten dem critics. I hope and pray that it gets bush up off his boney ass and gets some help out to the Gulf coastline.

But it gets very frustrating, and here is another reason. We too are cleaning up from Katrina and Wilma here in south Florida. I come in contact daily with visitors from the northern states who come here and are in total shock seeing the damage. "We had no idea!" This administration likes to keep the american people in the dark about anything negative that occurs in the country, whether it be the deaths of young soldiers or the poverty of its citizens or the continuing misery of citizens who were ravaged by the worst natural disaster to ever hit this country.

End of rant. Thinking about you daily, my friend.

Oh, I know, jobycom posted images he took when he was on the Coast for Thanksgiving and folks are like, you mean it is still that bad.

And another poster in GD was arguing with the OP when the OP posted about blankets being sent to the area. Seems that poster was in France and since the media hasn't covered the destruction, things are better here on the Coast and the blankets aren't necessary.

Sumofbiscuiteater, do folks think we can magically rebuild and recover in 3 months? And sadly, we can't even get folks here to pay attention when we post about things.

Did you see ABC's coverage last week when they referred to the area as third world standards?

It is sad that we can't get the media to pay attention to our plight and sadder still that DUers won't pay attention either. This should be the rally cry for the party - the weed has foresaken total areas of the nation.

Skinner did start a new group for Hurricane survivors (well the title is victims, but I have a push to change that - I am no victim, I am a survivor.)

 (end)

Thanks for all of your support and for sending me happies and positive energies. :loveya:

64. Real leaders would go ahead
& buy the needed trailers, keep careful track of the costs & charge it to the Feds. What happened to state leadership? What happened to taking charge? Why does it seem that everyone(at the top of the power structure) is just hoping someone else will take this off their hands? There is a fatal lack of ingenuity in todays' leaders, but that's what happens when all one has to do is win a populartiy contest.

he is telling the truth on this. Even the Governor, Haley Barbour, is unhappy with the way things are going and he is a bosom buddy, quote unquote, with Bush.
