Fire guts a US Embassy office
A FIRE gutted a small office at the US Embassy compound in Manila Saturday afternoon. Fire investigators said the blaze lasted for about 25 minutes. The fire, with undetermined origin, started at about 1:25 p.m. and was put out at around 1:50 p.m.
Senior Fire Officer 1 Wilson Tana of the Manila Fire Department said it took some time for the fire trucks to get into the fire scene because firemen had to go through the regular security inspection at the embassy’s entrance gate. Tana said firefighters were also prohibited from conducting an investigation because the burnt building is in US territory.
US officers said they had to restrict the entry of anyone because the fire happened right after a bomb threat was reported, allegedly targeting one of the venues of the ongoing Southeast Asian Games in Manila.
The fire was unrelated to the security threat that disrupted the sports event at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex at about 1 p.m. on Saturday.
